I'm Undead and Hungry: Meet a Zombie

I'm Undead and Hungry: Meet a Zombie is a cute and non-scary way to introduce kids to zombies, just in time for Halloween.  Roscoe is a kid and a zombie; but don't worry, he'll only show up in movies, TV and stories.

I read this to kids aged 5-7 and they loved the silly pictures and tips on how to scare away zombies (just in case).

I thought it was neat that some actually zombie folklore from around the world was included at the end as well as a zombie writing activity.

This book is awesome for any dinosaur lover out there!  Unfortunately, I only had the electronic ARC and couldn't actually do the paper pop-out portion.  Although, there is a lot of great and scientifically accurate information packed in here.

Kids will learn about what makes a dinosaur, the time periods they lived in, fossils and what exactly paleontologists do.  At the end there is a field guide to 12 different dinosaurs which gives you the information necessary in order to put together the fossils from the paper 'dig site.'  Like a real dig site, the fossils to each time period are not all together or in the correct configuration. It looks like a fun puzzle to figure out, I can't wait to get a real copy!

Little Bear is getting ready to hibernate for the winter. Before he gets ready for his long sleep, Little Bear wants to say goodnight to all of his forest friends.

A good bedtime story and introduction to forest animals and hibernation for younger kids.  Nice, bright pictures filled the pages. Little Bear says goodnight to a badgers, mice, deer, fox, rabbit, squirrel, owl and wolf. Some of these animals might also hibernate, and they tell Little Bear, others might look out for him while he sleeps.  It's a cute story, but even some of the children knew that a bear would usually eat some of these animals.

Who Was Here?  Discovering Wild Animal Tracks

Life-size animal tracks from around the world coupled with rhyming verse ask kids the question 'who was here?'  After the animal is revealed, there is information about the animal including it's size, diet and why it tracks look the way they do.

Kids ages 6-9 enjoyed guessing which animals made the tracks, some were challenging since animals from around the world were included; but, this made for a great opportunity to learn about something different.

I especially liked when two footprints of animals that have relationships were combined, such as predator-prey or mutualism.  In the back of the book there are tips for finding and identifying your own animal tracks.

By: Sharon Katz Cooper  Illustrated by: Tom Leonard

Picture
When Whales Cross the Sea is an informative children's science picture book about the migration of grey whales.  Information is chunked into nice sections along with colorful but life-like pictures.

I read this to a group of 5-8 year old children.  They loved the facts about how much a whale ate and how much a baby whale weighed.  There was also enough of a story line along with the facts to keep them interested the whole way through.

I liked all the information about habitats, food chains and why the whales migrate.
