A true story of an empowered woman who chose to fix a real problem in her community.  Isatou Ceesay noticed plastic bags accumulating in her town in Garmbia.  The plastic was useful, but it didn't degrade after people were done with it and soon one plastic bag became a many discarded plastic bags causing many issues.  Isatou decides to solve the problem by recycling the bags into something new.


An inspirational story with a strong message that can empower kids to solve a problem in their own community.  The writing is simple, but with a strong message of how something small can build exponentially.  Isatou's character shows determination and insight.  The setting is brought out through the colorful and graphic illustrations. This is a great book for any classroom, especially if you wanted to try your own plastic crochet.

A fun story with bright illustrations and a good message.  For kids that have ever had self-esteem issues or been called a name they did not appreciate, Dolores the dandelion is a character everyone can relate to.  The book also includes some common flowers and why flowers like dandelions are important.

Can a spider be your best friend?

Sure, and kids will learn why after reading this book.  Spiders don't have to be scary, even though they have four pairs of eyes, they can be funny, too.  Kids will learn that spiders are not insects (although the word arachnid is not introduced), where spiders can live, what they eat and some fun ways about how spiders live.  Most of all, this book will let kids know that most spiders aren't dangerous and that they can help us out a lot by eating insects that bother us.

Ever wonder what the big deal is about a little louse on your head?

Head Lice, another book is Elise Gravel's Disgusting Critters series introduces kids to a head louse in a non-threatening and humorous way.  You'll learn that it is an insect, that it only lives on humans, what they do to us and how they get there.  Head Lice allows kids to explore and learn about an insect that is usually not talked about and never in a positive light. Even though head lice don't benefit humans at all, this book still lets kids know not to be afraid or think that they are gross or dirty if they do have head lice.

A Native American story re-telling that explains why some trees loose their leaves in winter and some trees keep their leaves all year round. Sparrow has hurt his wing and is not able to migrate with the rest of his family.  He looks and looks for a tree that will shelter him for the winter months, but most of the trees turn Sparrow away.  Sparrow finally finds a tree that will take him in; that tree is rewarded is rewarded for it's kindness with a gift from the Creator. 

With beautiful and accurate pictures, Pine and the Winter Sparrow offers up a lesson on kindness as well as the environment.  Highlighting several trees that loose their leaves in winter and the Pine tree, which keeps it's leaves, kids were able to recognize the common trees such as Oak, Maple and Elm that they see everyday and see that their leaves were not there in the winter.  A good story for introducing why some trees loose their leaves in winter as well as overall kindness.
