Animals of the Forest

Picture
Animals of the Forest is a cute picture book for beginning readers that introduces children to nine different forest animals.

The text for each animal is only a sentence or two long and is written with simple words that kids can begin to sound out. The descriptions of the animals include what each animal eats, a special feature, or how they live. The pictures of the animals are drawn sweetly, not every animal looks realistic, but they will not scare children either. One issue I have is that the text for the last animal in the book, the wolf, ends with an ellipses (...), which makes it seems like there would be another animal after that one, but there is not.

Poison Dart Frogs are one of my favorite animals.  This is a great introduction to the world of Poison Dart Frogs.  With brief text, just enough to get the point across and colorful up-close pictures that draw readers eyes in and promote interest in this amazing animal.

Where the frogs live, how they are poisonous, how they get around and how they reproduce are established.  This book will be sure to stimulate interest in learning more about Poison Dart frogs.

Mason is a boy who is afraid of bees until he comes face to face with a Mason Bee only to find that the bee is afraid of humans too!

In this fun and educational story Mason learns about the importance of bees from a bee himself.  Once Mason is assured that bees are not out to hurt him, he learns why bees are important to him and the ecosystem.  In a rhyming scheme, kids will learn not to fear bees, what bees do to help us and what we can do to help them.  Mason Meets a Mason Bee introduces the very important topic of the declining bee population to children in an easy-to-understand way and opens up a dialogue for what children can do to help the bee population.

Lobo is back with a mission from a Santa!  Snowy Owl drops off a message to Lobo all the way from the North Pole and Santa needs Lobo's help.  Lobo begins his adventure right away and makes his way north meeting many new friends along the way.  Lobo and his friends have to help Santa so he is able to deliver gifts on Christmas Eve.

Lobo's adventures are always fun and this time Santa's new electric sleighs have caused a power outage in the Northern Hemisphere.  Without lights, Santa will have a hard time finding children's homes.  On his journey, Lobo meets many Arctic animals including an Arctic mouse, Arctic fox, a polar bear, Arctic wolf and Arctic hare, a great way to introduce kids to animals in this habitat.
