The Journey

Picture
A family like yours or mine, torn apart and scared by war that has broken out near their home decides to leave the only place they've ever known and set out on a long and dangerous journey for a safer place.  Through their journey, the tired, fearful and loving family notices that the birds have followed them the whole way and together, they have migrated to a new place.

Written at an extremely relevant time in our world's history, The Journey is a meaningful and significant story to share with children.  In plain and straightforward language that will take the reader and listener through a series of emotions, the story of a migrant is told.  Without placing the migrants in a specific country or giving them a definite race, this could easily be the story of any migrant or refugee fleeing one country and coming to another.  Beautiful, unique and intricate illustrations add to the emotional impact of the story.  Appropriate for children (and even adults) of all ages to help understand and empathize with this current event in the human condition.

Trick or Treat, It's Halloween

Picture
A cute, short story about moments on Halloween.  A good first Halloween book to share with little ones.  Highlighting costumes, candy and tricks, and ending with Halloween is a great holiday to spend with family and friends. The e-copy that I received was done in powerpoint, the pictures were big and bright, which my son liked, but some of the text blended in.  Also, one of the characters to be says 'physic,' but I'm pretty sure they meant psychic.

How Many Legs?

Picture
A small, hardback counting book perfect for any little ones.  The first part of the book counts with you, stating the number in written form and symbol.  There are wonderful, colorful and whimsical pictures that go along with each number.  I loved the owl pictures and the robots (including a Dalek!), The seven turrets might be a little hard for some kids to understand.

The second part of the book asks kids to count how many in each picture encouraging them to interact and count the items on the page from one through ten.  A fun, bright book for children starting to work on their counting skills.

Let's Go Outside

Picture
Another small hardcover made for little hands, Let's Go Outside explores common items and actions that kids might see outside throughout the seasons.  Each page features a word paired with a colorful but simple picture of the item or action such as Gardening, Bird, Fruits and Vegetables, Tree, Leaves and Pumpkin.  Perfect for children starting to do word association and who love the outdoors.

Shapes Are Fun!

Picture
A wonderful and interactive shape book for little ones and preschool learners.  Shapes are Fun begins with a simple introduction of each shape with the word of the shape and a colorful illustration.  Next, there are examples of where you will see each shape in real life, an egg is oval shaped and the pyramids are triangles.  I did think that ‘stars are star shaped’ was a little weak, how about starfish or star fruit?  Anyway, the questions posed throughout the book such as ‘can you name the shapes?’ and ‘how many different shapes can you see?’ make this a great first shape book.  Along with the high contrast, simple and bright illustrations, the small shape of the book itself along with sturdy binding allows this to be a great book for small hands.

At the Beach: First Words

Picture
A simple book that introduces young ones to words of objects and actions that they might find at the beach.  Perfect for introducing new words to baby or for young ones just learning how to read, At the Beach: First Words introduces the word with a picture on each page.  With nouns and verbs, the words range from swimming to ice cream, sandcastle to seal and snorkeling to freckles.  Bright, high contrast, and fun illustrations bring together each page and the last page is a great picture of the whole beach that we loved pointing to and naming every item that we could find.
