About the Book: Handpicked by Dani Oden
Publication date: August 2014
Genres: Contemporary, New Adult

Synopsis:
College freshman Jill Holloway takes one look at the stuck-up girls going through sorority rush and nearly returns her borrowed dress and heels. Against her best judgment, she ends up falling for the prestige and parties, and snagging a bid from a top house. After moving in, she quickly grows skeptical of her too-perfect sorority sisters. She tries to ask questions, though no one will take time from their busy social calendar to give her any real answers.

Jill wastes no time digging for everything she’s not supposed to find, and soon comes face-to-face with a big and bloody secret hidden in her sorority’s basement. She knows she’s in over her head, but taking off so soon would raise the perfectly-plucked eyebrows of her suspicious new sisters. She’s stuck until she can make a smooth exit.

But the closer she gets to leaving, the more it becomes clear that it won’t be as simple as she hoped. A tempting fraternity guy, a best friend who needs her, and new details about what has really been happening in the basement have her questioning what her next move should be, and whether or not it’ll be worth the risks.

HANDPICKED is a New Adult coming of age, with elements of suspense and romance.

A Guest Post With Dani:
Guest Post: Deleted Scenes

Thank you so much for having me! I thought I’d offer readers a “behind-the-scenes” peek at some sections that were part of earlier drafts of HANDPICKED, and why they didn’t make the final cut.

This first one is part of an extended version of the opening scene. Our main character Jill is trying to get ready for her final night of sorority rush in her dorm bathroom…

The girl from the stall emerged, wearing a gold lacy number and looking movie-star perfect except for her red, watery eyes. She reached around me, grabbed a paper towel, and daintily dabbed her mouth. "I can't effing handle this," she said, squeezing into my mirror space and fluffing her wavy brown hair. "I haven't been able to eat for days."

Blond handed her a piece of gum. "Couple more hours, and it'll all be worth it. And that dress looks amazing on you now."

The brunette caught me staring at her reflection and raised her eyebrows. She sized me up, clearly not approving of how I was still in my yoga pants and a tank top, and how my long red hair was in a loose ponytail. "Where are you preffing?" she said casually, asking which sorority parties I was visiting for the final round of rush that night. Thankfully, I had just learned the jargon earlier that day.

I shrugged. "I can't remember, my list is back in my room."

She gaped at me. Her hand stopped not even an inch from her face, her lip gloss still pointed to her mouth. "You can't remember?"

Blond started to laugh as if I'd been joking.

I bristled. "Well, all their names sound the same, don't they?"

They stared at me.

"I guess some do," the brunette said slowly, like she didn't really think so at all.

My cell phone started buzzing from my pocket, so I quickly grabbed it and scooped up my small make-up bag. "Excuse me," I said, glad to get away. They smelled like a Victoria's Secret store mixed with throw-up.

Ultimately, this exchange was cut simply for pacing. I wanted to speed up the time it takes Jill to get back to her room so we can get her out the door and to the sororities faster.

This second one is from a scene when Jill dozes off next to her crush, Tad…

In my sleepy state, I was less guarded than I would have been under most circumstances. He started tugging at my sweatshirt, and instead of encouraging him to explore underneath it with his hands, I simply raised my arms up high. Obediently, he lifted it. The hood was tight over my head, but he managed to squeeze it off me, pulling out my ponytail holder. My long red hair fell loosely over my face and I imagined it looked quite sexy. Well, sexy for me, which is about as sexy as like, one of those live-action Disney movies that gets played on Sunday night cable.

This section was cut because of Jill’s reference to being less guarded because she was tired. I was concerned that her comment it made it seem like she wasn’t that into Tad, which was not at all what I was going for – the final version of the scene makes it *pretty* clear that she’s excited to be with him J

Thank you for giving me the chance to share these scenes!

Read An Excerpt:

“We shouldn’t be talking out here,” Sister President said, and the three of them swiftly set their glasses down and disappeared through a doorway on the other side of the room.

Once the door had closed behind them, Hannah predicted, "Something's about to go down.”

"Where'd the pourers go?" Lindy asked, glancing around.

"You guys are weirding me out." I interjected. "Can't we just enjoy this? There's food and good drinks and we won't have hangovers. Maybe we should try to meet some of the other-"

I didn't get a chance to finish. All the lights in the room went out at once, and the tall curtains lining the wall of windows fell dramatically in front of the glass, blocking out the sunlight. Someone shrieked, and a frantic hush fell over our group.

A strong female voice grabbed our attention. "Get ready, bitches."

A candle flickered, illuminating a face I didn't recognize. "Your new life starts now."

Reading & Discussing this creatively adventurous novel with my sub-teen was a blast!

There are several characters that make this book amazingly unique, but our main focus is on Julie, a teen vampire, and a zombie- child whose only vocabulary is “brains”. While these two run for their lives, they’re lucky enough to encounter more paranormal creatures with the same problem: they’re the newest culinary fad. Unfortunately, there’s a psychotic woman leading a group of hunters that makes Ted Nugent look like Mr. Rogers. Throw in a zombie rancher, his spokeswoman, and a reporter scorned, and you have one heck of an adventure!

For the record, I’m not a zombie fan, but I truly enjoyed this book! This author is brilliant! I highly recommend picking this one up!

As a parent, I must warn that there is some descriptive violence involved here. Although my son & I had a wonderful time reading this, I wouldn’t recommend this novel for children below the 6th grade.

I was gifted a copy by the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Summer Read!!!!, July 9, 2014
By
Kelli Sue Landon "wstock70" (Illinois) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Smorgasbord (Kindle Edition)
Do you like having cookouts in the summer? Well, what about a smorgasbord? This book is totally out of my comfort zone as a reader and I loved it! I am normally not the zombie/vampire fan and I'm here to tell you, this is a fun summer read! Great for all ages, young and old.
The story centers around Julie, who was born as a vampire when she was a teen. She is older, but still lives in her teen body. She saves a little zombie boy from danger and takes him under her wing, staying clear of humans. Yes, in this story, humans hunt ghouls of all kinds, and serve them up at the annual Monster Mash Food Festival. I don't think I would personally like to eat a zombie or a werewolf and vampires are hard to catch, so that's way too much work for me. But the suburbanites, also known as the Wilkerson family, work hard to kill the ghouls in the neighborhood, even by teaching their children to shoot them dead. Our main vampire, though, snacks on veggies only.
I loved that this story was like a car chase, not knowing what was around every corner as Julie protects the zombie boy while trying to outwit the Wilkersons. She learns to fight for her survival and makes many friends along the way. Sohal makes us root for the monsters, which I thought he did brilliantly. Also the big plus was learning about Julie's past. I connected with her during this flashback as she tells the zombie boy a bedtime story: The story of her early vampire life. The only disappointment for me was, I was hoping to read more about the ghosts. I found it clever that ghosts were drank, not eaten, hence the term: Spirits.
Highly recommended for a fun summer read, fast paced, and keeps you on the edge! I really hope there is a book two

The Elementalists

C. Sharp

It is the hottest year on record for the fifth year in a row, and famine riots spread across much of Africa. Along the Gulf Coast, the hurricane season is one of the worst in memory. The latest in a string of 9.0 strength earthquakes has claimed two-hundred thousand lives in central China. Far below the earth’s crust, imprisoned in ancient slumber, the elemental powers of the land grow restless…

All seems normal in small town Virginia, where fifteen year old Chloe McClellan dreads the start of her sophomore year. Whip-smart, athletic and genuine, she’s also a bit of an angry loner who is totally unaware of her charms. Despite her plans to stay under the radar, Chloe becomes a target for the fiery queen of the It-girls in fifth period gym. She then draws instant notoriety when she’s struck by lightning after her first disastrous day of school. As if that weren’t bad enough, she soon comes to believe, that either she’s going insane, or her accident has unleashed a powerful and terrifying creature from the mythological world—triggering the final countdown to the world’s sixth great extinction level event.

Chloe finds some solace as she inexplicably wins the affections of an unlikely trio of male classmates: the earthy and gregarious captain of the football team, the flighty stoner with a secret, and an enigmatic transfer student who longs for the sea. All the while she struggles with the growing realization that “Dragons” exist, and she may be the only one who can stop them.

The Elementalists, book one of the Tipping Point Prophecy, follows Chloe and her group of friends, and enemies, as they struggle to save humanity by harnessing the power of the elements.

Steampunk Giveaway!

8/7/2014

All Covers Large

"What is steampunk?"

The easy answer is that steampunk stories are set in the 19th century Victorian era when steam-driven technology was primary, corsets were tight, and tea was a formal affair. But that's like saying science fiction is about spaceships… when the genre is much broader, deeper, and more amazing than that. (And yes, steampunk is a sub-genre of science fiction.) With a thriving real-life steampunk culture that is very do-it-yourself in inventing characters, costumes, and gadgets, the real answer is that steampunk can be virtually anything you want it to be. It's this tremendous devotion to creativity that actually drew me in to writing steampunk in the first place (along with the gorgeous costumes!). In this steampunk bundle, we have an east-Indian fantasy romance, a Asian-flavored pirate love story, a Shakespearean retelling, two stories set in a common world with a floating island, a young adult adventure about a lightning invention, and a story that uses Arcane Science in the modern world. These stories are perfect examples of the truly rich diversity of steampunk stories… while each also portrays a world where steam technology shifts the ground under their character's feet. We think of the Victorian era as being somewhat repressed, but it really was a time of tremendous change: class divisions, and the aristocracy it supported, were being challenged by the everyday men and women who were bringing about amazing technological advances. Science was on the rise! And the beautiful costuming and formal traditions of the past were coming into conflict with those first hints of the modern world. Steampunk stories in general resonate with readers not just because of their fun, escapist fantasy—a flight into the past when things were simpler, adventures were fought with sword and gun, and social strictures brought some order to the world—but because the upheaval wrought by technological change still resonates with our real lives today. What is steampunk? It's a story like any other story: a chance to escape the world for a few hours, to live in the wilderness of an author's imagination, to adventure, to fall in love, to die for one's friends. It's classic storytelling in a visually rich, emotionally gripping era that still resonates with us today. Plus you get to rollick about in corsets and top hats, inventing gadgets and saving the world from the villains who turn that fantastic steam technology to their own dastardly purposes. Strap on your goggles and prepare for the ride! – Susan Kaye Quinn The initial titles in the bundle (minimum $3 to purchase) are:
  • Black Mercury by Charlotte E. English
  • Zelda Pryce by Joseph Robert Lewis
  • The Machine God by MeiLin Miranda
  • A Midsummer Night's Steampunk by Scott E. Tarbet
If you pay more than the bonus price of just $10, you'll get another three books:
  • Lumière by Jacqueline E. Garlick
  • Third Daughter by Susan Kaye Quinn

It allows easy reading on computers, smartphones, and tablets as well as Kindle and other ereaders via file transfer, email, and other methods. Hidden Sins Excerpt #1

I looked into his eyes as his words etched through the many
layers of guilt and confusion that had become my comfort. My gaze fell to his
mouth as he spoke and my mind ran wild with possibilities.

“You aren’t responsible for what’s happened to the people back
at home or out here. You’re doing the best you can and that’s all you can ask of
yourself,” he murmured.

I placed my hand on his shoulder as I leaned my body against
his. “How do you know the right thing to say?” I asked, almost
breathless.

“Years of therapy.” He smiled, pressing his forehead against
mine, looking down at me.

The rawness of the emotions that swirled through my body was
nothing compared to the feelings of desire I had for this man. The heat from his
body rolled through mine, and I wanted nothing more than to be kissed. He ran
his fingers along my spine as I felt my pulse quicken, his firmness pressing
against me.

“The diners might be able to see us,” I
  whispered.

“Then let’s give them a show.”

About the Book:
Title: Denim & Diamonds

Author: Lori Robinett

Genre: Romance / Women’s Fiction

Attorney Beth Jameson might know her way around the courtroom, but doesn’t know a cutting horse from a carousel horse. That doesn’t slow her down when her estranged father dies and leaves her his horse ranch just south of Kansas City. True to form, the gift comes with strings attached – she has to be successful in her first year, or she loses her inheritance. All of it.

Beau, the handsome ranch foreman, was her father’s right hand man, but she must convince him that she’s in it for the long haul – that she isn’t just some city girl that doesn’t respect her father’s legacy. She has to learn the business from the ground up, and must learn to trust others – not an easy thing for a woman who was abandoned by her father and then by her ex-fiancé. Beth can’t believe how quickly the ranch becomes home, and how hard she is willing to work to make it hers . . . and learns that everyone deserves a second chance at happiness.

Author Bio

Lori is a creative soul trapped in a paralegal's body. As a child, she wrote pages and pages in longhand. As a teenager, she pounded away on a typewriter. As a college student, she learned about criticism (death to English Comp!). As an adult, she found her hours filled with work and parenting. Then, she rediscovered the joy of escaping into a world of her own creation.

She lives in rural Missouri with her husband and daughter. A very spoiled Miniature Schnauzer and Miniature Beagle allow Lori and her husband to live in their house, and the outside is patrolled by BK (short for Barn Kitty) and Patches (a sweet tom cat stray that missed his calling as a lap cat).

Lori has been writing since she was a kid (Stephen King has been her hero since the librarian used to sneak her into the 18 & older section of the local library), but then life got in the way and her dream of writing the Great American Novel had to wait. After the death of her best friend at the age of 34 (cancer), Lori realized that today’s dreams can’t wait. Her husband bought her a laptop and encouraged her to start writing. She discovered National Novel Writing Month, an international writing competition that encourages writers to turn off the internal editor and write with abandon. The challenge is to write a 50,000 word novella in 30 days. That first year, in a caffeine-fueled frenzy, Lori wrote Denim & Diamonds. Since 2004, Lori has won National Novel Writing Month eight times and served as a Municipal Liaison for the Fulton group of NaNo’ers. Her novels cover everything from romance to thrillers, but mystery is the thread that binds them all together. Her favorite authors are Colleen Donnelly, Paul Doiron, Lea Waite, James Patterson, Stuart Woods, Hugh Howey, HP Mallory and, well, the list goes on and on.

Book Excerpts

DENIM & DIAMONDS by Lori Robinett

Headlights swept over her car and she looked in the rearview mirror as a vehicle pulled to the side of the road behind her. An overhead light popped on as someone got out, then blinked out as the door slammed shut. She sucked in a deep breath and let it whoosh out in a sigh.

Help. Thank goodness.

Wait. This could be good or bad. Good if he was the hero-type, bad if he was the ax murderer-type. The way her luck was running, it could go either way. Her fingers froze around the door handle as she scanned the inside of the sedan, looking for something she could use as a weapon.

Not a damned thing.

He rapped on her window, the sound loud in the confines of the car. He tugged, swinging the car door open. The metal creaked in protest and there in front of her, bathed in the harsh glare of the dome light was the man on the cover of the Maya Banks novel sitting on her nightstand.

Or a reasonable facsimile of him, anyway.

Dark blonde hair poked out from under his cowboy hat, framing a face tanned by sun instead of beds, and crystal clear blue eyes that seemed to look into your soul. And stubble. A dusting of very sexy stubble.

She gave herself a mental shake. Men are the enemy. Men are no good.

“Ma’am! Ma’am! Are you okay?” The cowboy shouted over a clap of thunder.

She nodded, taking in the angles of his face, and those eyes that she wanted to stare into. A sigh escaped her lips when she realized he was wearing a black cowboy hat and a leather duster. Perfect.

Perhaps her declared moratorium on men had been a bit hasty. She smiled and brushed a stray tendril of hair out of her face.

“Hi.” So much for a great first impression.

“Hi, yourself. You okay?” His voice was deep and warm, a nice contrast to the cold, blowing rain. Twin frown lines creased his tanned forehead beneath the hat. She didn’t know cowboys were still around, rescuing damsels in distress. A wry laugh escaped as she thought of herself as a damsel in distress.

If he only knew . . .
