EXCERPT:

There they were.

The one at the center – he was tall, but not the tallest. His burgundy hair looked like a jewel among all the green. Hunter. He tilted his head as he studied her. She could tell he was trying to get her scent.

Then he pulled his hand out of his pocket and Kenzie clenched her hands into fists when she saw the potion.

“Would you take off your charm?” Hunter asked. “It’s…strange not to know your scent.”

Kenzie looked to the black-haired one, Ash. The memory of his arm around her waist made her cheeks heat and she hated herself for how badly she wanted him to do it again. Ash crossed his arms over his broad chest and his blue eyes sparkled when he gave her a mischievous grin, like he knew exactly what she was thinking.

But these foxes looked more like really fit human men than the larger predator shifters did in their human forms. They were still gorgeous, but not massive like Samuel was. She wondered for a brief moment if the foxes had that brutal strength shifters whispered about. Like the Fates had taken pity on their size and made them strong enough to take on a wolf – sometimes stronger.

Then Finnick ran his hand through his flame-red hair and walked forward. Kenzie knew she should keep her eyes on Hunter, but this one had been the first she’d seen. Something about his charm had an edge to it, but the way he grinned at her – it was infectious and she desperately wanted to know the joke.

“Did you know foxes can feed on chaos and pain?” Finnick asked. His voice was serious despite the expression on his face and it made Kenzie jump, like he’d scared her. “I can taste your pain.”

“What do you want from me?” she demanded, watching the way Finnick circled her.

“We want to know what you smell like first,” Hunter told her. “Maybe I’ll give you the potion for it.”

She narrowed her eyes at him. “What do you want with my scent?” She’d kept it a secret for years. No one knew her true scent. It was her only weapon against the shifters.

“To know you,” Ash told her, stepping forward to circle in the other direction.

Hunter smiled and tucked his hands back in his pockets. “Take off the charm, and I’ll tell you why we’re here. Maybe…maybe we can make a deal.”

Hope flared for a brief moment before she crushed it. These were foxes. Stereotypes were true for a reason. Most avoided foxes because they were impossible to trust. But…if he’d give her the potion? What was she willing to do for it – for Selene?

Slowly she reached up. Each earring was enchanted to help her exist in the paranormal world. Two were for scent, another to mask the sound of her heart and her breathing, and then the fourth was to enhance her senses like sight and smell. The last was to give her strength when she activated it – enough strength to take down a bear shifter if she needed to, but only for an hour.

Without powers she was more vulnerable than she would ever admit. Without her charms she was defenseless against any paranormal being. Her hands shook as she removed them all. No need to give away which charms did what.

Once they all twinkled in the palm of her hand she glared at Hunter and put them in her dress pocket, daring him to get closer so she could snatch the potion from his pocket.

Her auditory charm still in her ear helped her hear the sound of the underbrush being crushed by Ash’s foot as he came up behind her. His hand brushed down her arm and she shivered.

Kenzie knew they could hear the beating of her heart now, they could hear her breathing quicken as she felt Ash brush his nose against the back of her neck. She blushed, knowing they could smell how nervous she was – how much she liked the way he touched her.

Clenching and unclenching her hands she focused on her breathing – control. That’s what she’d learned among the humans. Perfect, unwavering control. She’d spent too many years relying on her charms. Kenzie needed to practice more.

Ash jerked back from her and growled. “Mate,” he hissed, baring his teeth.

Kenzie bared hers right back. “No,” she snapped. “I am not.”

Finnick’s eyebrows rose in surprise. “She’s your mate? How fun. Let me smell.”

Kenzie wanted them to get the fuck away from her, but she wanted the potion more. How close would Hunter get?

Ash got in her face, his blazing blue eyes searching hers. “Whether you like it or not, you’re mine.”

“I can deny the bond.”

He grinned then, slow and full of fire. “Sure, but only if you mean it.”

A flicker of doubt ran through her.

And then Finnick’s hand on her bare shoulder had her whipping around to smack his hand away. “Mate,” he said, grinning like he’d won the lottery. “You can hit me if you want. I like it rough.”

“I am not your mate. Even if I wanted to, I can’t be both of yours.”

Hunter strolled right up to her then, the toes of his boots brushing the tips of her Converse. He looked down at her, so close she had to crane her neck up to look into those strange, glittering brown eyes of his. When the sun hit them they glittered like liquid gold.

Despite her common sense she was entranced by him, by the strange musky scent he exuded with its hint of sharp citrus. “Foxes can mate in triads like the felines,” Hunter murmured, examining the line of her jaw like he thought it might hold the answer to whatever question he had. “It’s entirely possible, especially considering how close the three of us are.”

Then his hand shot out, so quick she barely even registered the motion until his large, calloused hand wrapped around her throat. Her heart pounded so hard it was difficult to breathe, but when she had a second to evaluate the situation she realized his touch was so gentle it was barely there.

His thumb brushed along the column of her throat and damn her, she shivered again, eyes closing as the touch filled her with a strange electricity.

Kenzie’s eyes shot open when Hunter bent to run his nose from the top of her shoulder all the way to her throat until he was just under her jaw. His lips against her bare ear felt…delicious.

“The taste of your pain is intoxicating, mate,” Hunter murmured against her skin.

His words felt like a confession.

EXCERPT:

“I remember the first time I saw you.”

Davina chuckled. “I’m sure I was screeching in the halls of the palace in Zhar. My mother hated that I’d been so wild.”

A rumble from Alexios’ chest vibrated against her ear, and she found comfort in the sound.

“No. The first time I laid eyes on you, you were scurrying in the woods, tripping over yourself carrying food, which I’m sure you’d stolen from the kitchens. You were heading to a baby foal you’d discovered under some bramble.”

Davina took a moment to enjoy his face. Lines fanned the corners of his eyes while his dark lashes stretched away from them. He smiled, and his lone dimple made its tiny dent. Her mouth parted. It had been a long time since she’d seen him smile like this. His joy spread through her.

“I remember the foal. I named him Laeb,” she chuckled. “I knew someone was there! I’d stopped to look, but I couldn’t see anyone. It was you?”

“Yes. I was in the woods taking some time to myself. The barracks were loud, and I still struggled with my transition. It was my first time seeing the Queen’s daughter, but I knew instantly who you were.” He buried his hand into her hair at her nape, his thumb lightly caressing her scalp.

“I saw you and knew then that this world was not so bleak. That there is light and beauty capable of vanquishing any darkness. And that a beautiful, rambunctious, young girl who sneaked food for an injured foal, would always have a piece of my heart.”

EXCERPT:

“Where do you go, Hazel Malloy?” Gabriel said in her ear.

“What?”

“I can feel you thinking hard.” He chuckled.

Hazel smiled. “I like this song,” she said, embarrassed as though he could actually tell that he’d caught her thinking about him.

“I do too.” He pressed his cheek to hers, and she let him.

As the song ended, there was a slight disturbance from the far end of the room. Hazel glanced up, and her heart paused.

Bananas.

Stanley stood in the entrance of the conservatory, tall and suited up, a hard look on his face, one eye almost swollen shut. He was flanked by some of his Knights, looking rough and out of place in suits, smirks on their faces as they scanned the room. It was like Eliot Ness and his Untouchables about to raid.

The “good people” of St. Louis stared uneasily and made way as the boys stalked into the room. Hazel sometimes forgot what they must look like to everyone else. They were a tough looking lot, battle scarred, and imposing.

The song ended and in the pause before the next one began, Stanley took long strides across the room, toward where Hazel and Gabriel stood, still holding hands.

Stanley’s eye twitched. “Heya, Haze.” He tilted his head toward Gabriel. “If it isn’t soft slugger trying to get to first base.” His jaw flexed, and he breathed in through his nose, and Hazel knew he was counting to ten.

Gabriel released Hazel’s hand and calmly replied, “Good to see you, Fields. You clean up nice.”

EXCERPT:

Evelyn felt the change before she opened her eyes. Her stance widened and her hands flexed with her magics.

No calm breeze brushed across the clearing. Tonight, a blistering wind struck her form, its howling whistle bounced irritatingly off her eardrums.

Instead of soft blues and purples, the moon was giving off shades of red and orange. Flames crackled and licked the trees of the forest, but nothing was burning. The dreamworld, or something in it, was irritated.

Slowly, she rotated, seeking information, waiting for the elements to speak. They buzzed, drawing her attention to one of the paths connecting the clearing to the woods.

The fire split into columns on either side of the trail and a form emerged from within the inferno. Tall, with broad shoulders and a lean trunk, the male stalked forward.

Blackened eyes locked on hers, so intense she felt them in her core. Long, predatory strides moved him directly in her path. Without thought, Evelyn opened the barrier and he stepped into the clearing.

The wind screamed and the only other sound she could hear was the boom of her thundering heart. He advanced swiftly, everything about his approach screamed he was a man possessed. His intent couldn’t be clearer.

In two second she was in his arms, his mouth slamming into hers. This first kiss—the first she’d ever experienced—was hard and unyielding. It was nothing like she had imagined, and almost more than she was prepared to receive. This wasn’t the kiss of a lover. It was a punishment.

Evelyn gasped and Marrok took advantage of her parted lips, driving his tongue into her mouth. Her fingers clenched the fabric on his shoulders as she trembled in his embrace, struggling to stay on her feet.

Her veins throbbed, her heated blood reaching a rapid boil. His arms tightened and she knew he’d never let her fall.

Evelyn felt him everywhere. His powers slid up and down her skin, caressing, inciting. Their shared breaths depleted her of oxygen and tiny pinpoints of light burst from behind her eyelids.

The high-pitched winds built into a crescendo and the blazes roared. Higher and higher until the dreamworld exploded with a blinding radiance, bathing their bodies in the white of their magics before returning once more to muted colors and a calm breeze. The forest was once again covered in purple and blue moonbeams.

The world settled, along with Marrok’s spirit. He’d been on the verge of something terrible. He’d gotten worse every day without his saatus. Another two years without her was out of the question.

Feeling once more in control of himself, he slowed the kiss, bringing a hand up to palm the back of her head. His lips drifted to the corner of her mouth, then to her temple, before dropping to her ear.

“Never again, moj draga,” he warned, biting her earlobe.

She shivered. “P-pardon?”

“You’ll never again wait so long to summon me.” He failed to mention his own unsuccessful attempts to enter her world.

Evelyn, still reeling from his arduous assault, took a moment to process. He was upset she hadn’t pulled him into her dreams. She smiled against his chest, then tipped her head back.

“Missed me, did you?”

“Don’t tease.”

“I’m not. I just wanted to hear you say it.”

“I don’t know you well enough to miss you. But I never imagined, little mate, once I’d confirmed for you that you were my saatus, you’d wait so long.”

Evelyn attempted to free herself from his arms. He didn’t budge and she glared up at him. “And I didn’t think, once you confirmed for me that I was your saatus, you’d do absolutely nothing to find me.”

He let go and she felt oddly bereft when he put space between them.

“So you didn’t call for me out of some sort of revenge?” he snapped, trying to let go of the last of his frustration.

“What? Of course not. And what makes you think I didn’t call for you?”

A muscle in his jaw ticked. He glared at his gorgeous mate, who had physically matured greatly in these last two years. Evelyn would be twenty-one by the next solstice, which meant she’d reached full physical maturity during their time apart.

Her cheekbones were more pronounced, giving off a regal countenance. Her small nose pointed to two full, pouty lips, still swollen from their shared passion.

Her breasts were larger, rounder, making her waist appear tiny. Maybe it was tiny. He was having trouble concentrating, caught between spanking her arse and kissing her senseless again.

“I think you didn’t call for me because I haven’t seen you in almost two and a half years, Evelyn.”

A thrill shot through her. Marrok really was upset about being away from her. He must have missed her greatly. “I’ll remind you I have no idea how you come to me in my dreams. Besides, I thought demons could break into the dreams of others, if they chose.”

His arms crossed, not liking the reminder. He, too, had tried everything he knew of to enter her dreamworld. For more than two years he’d desperately hunted her in his sleep, needing the touch of her skin to sooth his mind. With every attempt, he came up against a barrier he could not breach.

He’d come close to riding on Gwydion to retrieve her. When he’d last left, she’d been battered and bruised. He wanted to know of her health, to look upon her with his own eyes. The dreamworld was the only safe place to do so.

Several more attempts had been made by the rogues to breach the walls of the Terenuskit Fortress, the building he called home. Only the constant fighting kept him away from his mate. It reinforced the fact she would not be safe in Sundari.

Marrok was the strongest of his species. It was too risky for him to travel to the Westland and leave his people vulnerable. Or, worse, risk rogue demons following him. He was loath to bring her to the Southland. What was he to do? He felt like he was fighting on every front of his existence.

Evelyn licked her lips and he fixated on the reddened skin. He hadn’t intended to be so rough and he certainly hadn’t expected her to return with equal fervor. His trousers had grown uncomfortably tight, a direct result of her enthusiasm.

“If it means anything,” she said, “I did try reaching out to you. I’ve tried every night since. I was afraid you wouldn’t come for me so I tried to pull you here. I thought … I was afraid something had happened to you. They cut you.” Her voice whispered the last part sadly.

Marrok’s face softened. His mate had worried he’d been harmed. He reached for her and she didn’t resist his embrace.

Resting his chin atop her head, he told her, “I tried, as well. Dreamwalking is tricky business and, obviously, I was just as unsuccessful.”

“Why didn’t you come for me? To Gwydion?”

“My kingdom is not a safe place to be. I’m not inclined to endanger you.”

“Then don’t bring me to Sundari. You can still come to see me, to visit, maybe speak to my father?” she added hopefully.

Marrok exhaled. “Walk with me.”

He spoke with no emotion and Evelyn’s heart plummeted. He wasn’t going to come for her.

EXCERPT:

“I’ve worked security at four other buildings.” Benton held up as many fingers. His nails were short and black. Whether from blood or dirt, Callie didn’t care to guess.

She stood behind him and leaned forward to speak into his ear. Stale cigar stench clogged her nose. “You’ve worked jobs, but haven’t paid the Soul Charmer.”

Benton surged closer to the bar. His whiskey sloshed over the lip of the glass and onto his fingers. He slammed his shoulder backward and shifted to face Callie. The wide, milky eyes and taut tendons in his neck eased. Idiot. He licked the spilled liquor from his fingers. “I have experience, but they still won’t even let me take their exam.”

She gave two fucks about his ability to get a job. “That must suck. You owe the Charmer.”

“What do you mean?”

That’s not how this worked, and he knew it. “Cash or souls.”

“I ain’t got anything on me.”

“How are you paying for that Wild Turkey?”

Benton shot scattered looks in either direction. “It just you?”

It was, and normally she hated that. Her boyfriend Derek typically made these collection calls. He looked the part. Hulking and covered in leather and scars. She hid her wounds on the inside, and wielded dark eyeliner as war paint. Not exactly scary mofo material. Callie needed more from Benton than a simple rented soul, though, and that information need to be acquired alone.

Excerpt - Their First Encounter...

“Don’t jump,” I plead with the woman teetering on the edge of the rail of High Steel Bridge, Washington. She’s close to falling three hundred plus feet to her death.

She swiftly turns to me, a blackened stream of tears leaks from her beautiful, emerald eyes.

An explosion erupts in my chest as I get near her. “Whatever it is, you’ll get through it, but it’s not worth your life.”

I take a step closer, hoping to get nearer in case she ignores my appeal.

“I have nothing left,” she cries. “I’ve hurt and lost my family and everyone I care about. My kids hate me. All I’ve done is cause everyone heartache and pain. I have nothing to live for…I have nothing to offer them…they’d all be better off without me.”

“I doubt that’s true.”

She looks down and for a second, I think she’s going to jump.

“Please don’t!” I step closer to her and stretch out my hand. “Please. My name is Dorian—Dorian Rae. Please, let me help you.”

“You don’t know me…you don’t want to know me,” she sobs. “I’m a horrible person. I’ve done horrendous things and I’ve hurt innocent people, and no matter what I do, I could never, ever fix it. I could never give back what I took from them. No matter what I do, I will never make it right. Everyone would be better off if I weren’t here.”

Sweat trickles down my brow as I try to figure out what to say to this woman to stop her from taking her life.

I make another attempt. “I’m here. And if you’d like someone to talk to, I’d be willing to listen.” I slowly step closer to her. If I lunged forward, I could probably grab her wrist, but I don’t want to startle her with sudden movements and cause her to fall over.

I stretch my palm toward her. “Take my hand. Let’s give this another try. I’ll listen. I’m here to help you. Or maybe there’s someone else you’d prefer I call?”

“No. I’d be doing them all a favor if I were out of their lives. Thanks for trying to help…but this would be best for everyone. If I’m gone, I can’t hurt anyone—I can’t cause any more pain.”

“Look, I understand things are rough but please…”

She looks me in the eye. “I’m sorry.”

The gushing waterfall below fills the air accompanied by her sobs. She slightly lifts one of her feet as if to step to her death when I leap toward her, grab her wrist and pull her off the railing and into my arms where we both crash onto the road.

Finally.

I breathe.

I sit with this woman in my arms where for minutes her sobs echo through the clean air as she clutches onto me tightly and bawls. My shoulders relax as I hold her.

It then occurs to me that I’ve never seen someone in such intense pain although I can relate to it.

My chest clenches as I hold her in my arms and in some way, though I know nothing of her troubles, I feel this inexplicable connection to her and find myself relating to her pain.

“It’s going to be okay,” I whisper, gently stroking her long, jet-black hair. “You’ll make it through this. I’ve been there. I know it’s hard but give it some time.”

As I comfort her, a black and pink backpack catches my attention on the sidewalk. It matches her shoes so it must be hers. It looks like she’d been hiking. However, would she be hiking alone in such a secluded area? If she came up here for the sole purpose of killing herself, why bring camping gear?

“I’m sorry.” She backs away from my hold. “Thanks for your help.”

She rises to her feet, picks up her bag and walks toward the other side of the bridge where cars are parked.

“Wait.” I run to catch up with her. “Let me get you some help or take you to a hospital.”

“I’ll be fine. Thanks,” she responds still in tears.

My fear that she’ll try this again prompts me to hold her wrist. “You shouldn’t be alone. Let me help you. If you like, I’ll stay with you while you call a friend or a family member, or I can take you to the nearest hospital myself.”

“I don’t know you—”

“My name is Dorian Rae.” I slip my hands into my pocket, pull out my wallet, retrieve my driver’s license and my airline ID and show it to her.

Through her tears, she looks at it, then me in silence but does not respond.

“Look, I will not leave you here alone. Either we call someone you’re close to or you let me take you to the hospital. Otherwise, I’ll call the police. And I doubt I’ll get a signal up here so that leaves you with only one option. Come on, you shouldn’t be alone.”

I take her backpack from her hand and extend my open palm toward her. “Let me help you. Please.”

Hesitantly, she stretches out her hand to meet mine while soft sobs leave her lips.

“Did you drive up here?”

She nods.

“Well, I’ll take you to the hospital and we’ll worry about getting your car after.”

She murmurs a soft okay when we arrive at the parking area.

“May I ask your name? If you’re uncomfortable, you don’t have to tell me.”

She looks down and shakes her head as silent tears continue down her cheeks.

There are three vehicles here including mine. I open the door on the passenger side to allow her into my car, slip our backpacks into the backseats and take pictures of the remaining two vehicles before I get into the seat beside her. If she’s not comfortable telling me her name, I doubt she would want to tell me which of the two vehicles she owns.

I start the ignition and turn to her. “It’s okay. I’m going to take you to the nearest hospital. If there is anything else I can do for you, let me know, okay?”

Looking down, she nods in acknowledgment.

We drive along the wooded and sometimes barren road mostly in silence. The occasional sniffling from her tears are the only sounds invading the quiet air.

The late afternoon sun is leaving for the day. Fifteen minutes later, when I get to US Highway 101, a signal comes through on my cell phone and I find out the nearest hospital is fifteen minutes away.

She stays in the car when I pull up to the emergency room.

Is she scared?

After the last hour, I could only imagine that she might be. I tell the first nurse I see why she’s here. However, when I explain that I don’t know her, not even her name, they tell me they’ll take it from there.

The nurse walks out with a wheelchair to my vehicle and helps her out.

“Would you like me to stay with you?” I ask.

“No, thank you,” she whispers. “You’ve done enough.”

“We’ll handle it,” the nurse says to me.

I grab her bag from the back seat and hand it to her along with my business card. “If you ever need anyone to talk to, please call me.”

She whispers a soft, “Thank you.”

I watch the nurse wheel her away until she disappears from my view.

The Elite Seven

7 AUTHORS.
7 STORIES.
7 DEADLY SINS.

Since 1942, The Elite Seven Society have created and guided influential leaders, molding the country into something better. This society was birthed by Malcom Benedict, II who wanted more for Americans.  More wealth.  More influence.  More power. Some leaders have the skills, but not the influence, and that simply wasn’t fair according to Mr. Benedict. He invested his own money and time to construct a society that bred the best of the best, year after year.
But to be the best, you must be ruthless.
Good leaders make sacrifices.  Sometimes the sacrifices are hard, but the rewards are plentiful.  Mr. Benedict made sure to indulge these leaders with their utmost desires.  A devout Catholic himself, he designed a society that rewarded his leaders with the sins that were frowned upon.  If they were giving up love and happiness and joy for the betterment of the country, they deserved something in its stead.
Pride, Envy, Wrath, Sloth, Greed, Gluttony, and Lust.
Choosing leaders for this society means that it takes intense focus.  Only seven are to be selected, and the investments and time are showered upon the new seven chosen every four years.  The predecessors of each group of seven choose people who fit the sin that will mold them into who they are needed to be in the future—what America needs them to be.  This is after a detailed study of many potential candidates.  The university’s acting dean behaves as a liaison for the society bringing the college applicants to the predecessors so that the selection may begin.  The society members who are going out will bring forth a candidate that the society votes on and approves.
After they are chosen, the initiates are given a token and an invitation to initiation.  The initiation will be a test to their character and ability to do what’s right for the betterment of the society.  Once the initiates pass their test, they are discreetly branded with the mark of the society, and are groomed through challenges during the course of their elite education to breed them into the influential people they were meant to be.
Once in The Elite Seven, there is no getting out. The money and power are their reward. Should they choose to stray or break the rules, the society strips them of everything.  Anything they once had will be removed.  Opportunities will never arise.  They will no longer have the support of the society.  To this day, there have been no known occurrences of anyone from the society having to be banished.  This elite group of people are what every young man and woman aspire to be a part of.  While the group is a secret society, they are whispered about amongst the privileged folks in the country.  Anyone who is anyone knows of the group and secretly hopes it’s their son or daughter who are selected, for good fortune is showered on the family for decades to come.

Lust: NOW LIVE

I was born with wealth, athletic ability, and looks that could melt the panties off a nun.
I had a clear path to success.
Until fate dealt me a cruel blow, leaving me empty and in need of purpose.
My only focus now is to become part of The Elite—a secret society in one of the most prestigious colleges in the world.
But everything comes at a price, and with The Elite, you have to earn your place.
Lucky for me, being sinful is in my DNA.
The only obstacle to full initiation is my task: seduce the un-seducible, the forbidden, and lure her with the sins of the flesh.
Easy for a man like me…in theory.
She started as my task, but what happens when the lines between lust and love blur, and the need for power rages war with the need for her?
Accept your sin wisely, for the tasks given to earn your place are not for the weak—they’re for The Elite.
This is my life, my chance, my legacy.

Envy: Releasing March 25th

It was temptation that broke the sinner.
People say I have everything.
They’re wrong.
I may have looks, money, and privilege, but I don’t have the one thing that really matters, the one thing I crave: a woman with eyes only for me.
I’m searching for my woman—one who will fall to her knees because I’m her king. She’ll wear the crown of my tarnished name, and long for me when I’m not near. And when I am close, she’ll be naked across my lap, feeling the sting of my palm across her milky skin.
You could say I’m a sinner because I’d do anything to have the perfect woman—compliant to my every need and whim—and I’m envious of every couple who walks around naive to the luxury they have.
That’s why I joined The Elite, the most prestigious brotherhood in the south.
It’s the one place that will give me what I cannot have.
Only…the task assigned to me is too much for my jealous eyes.
Accept your sin wisely, for the tasks given to earn your place are not for the weak...they’re for The Elite.
Those who envy have no peace.
My name is Sabastian Westbrook.
I am Envy.

Greed: Releasing April 8th

I was born into a world of darkness—one that never touched me when I was around my brother, Mason Blackwell. Leader of The Elite Seven. The thing about darkness, though, is it’s persistent. Eventually, it pushes itself into my life, penetrating my soul and leaving its stench latched to every vein, rooted inside every bone, and sunken into every pore. I thought I reached rock bottom when I fell in love with my brother’s best friend. My very own brand of drug with no comedown. My own nightmare I never woke from. But I was wrong. So very wrong. When I returned to New Orleans, I arrived as a shell of the girl they once knew. Put on a smile. Be the sweet innocent girl they remember.
I’m Evie Blackwell, hostage to my demons. Can the damned be saved?
I’ve done some unforgivable acts in my years, but I never asked for forgiveness. Nothing beats the feeling of wrapping my hand around someone’s throat and watching as their life bleeds down their cheeks. She was everything I should have stayed away from. The first night I saw her, I knew I was doomed—a slave to the girl with the pretty eyes and soft smile. The girl who turned out to be my best friend's baby sister. I couldn’t stay away. I had to be near her, even if it meant ruining her in the process. I wanted to wreck her, so I could piece her back together—a puzzle only I knew how to solve.
I’m Micah Dixon.
Greed.
I come for everything and get everything I come for—and I want all of her. But she’s changed, and so have I.
I’m much, much worse now…

But sometimes money isn’t enough. I always want more, yet nothing seems to satisfy me.

About the Book:
When a homeless war veteran is beaten to death by the police, stormy protests ensue, engulfing a small New Jersey town. Soon after, three cops are gunned down. A multi-state manhunt is underway for a cop killer on the loose. And Dr. Tessa Thorpe, a veteran's counselor, is caught up in the chase. Donald Darfield, an African-American Iraqi war vet, war-time buddy of the beaten man, and one of Tessa's patients, is holed up in a mountain cabin. Tessa, acting on instinct, sets off to find him, but the swarm of law enforcement officers get there first, leading to Darfield's dramatic capture. Now, the only people separating him from the lethal needle of state justice are Tessa and ageing blind lawyer, Nathaniel Bodine. Can they untangle the web tightening around Darfield in time, when the press and the justice system are baying for revenge? Justice Gone is the first in a series of psychological thrillers involving Dr Tessa Thorpe, wrapped in the divisive issues of modern American society including police brutality and disenfranchised returning war veterans.

Read an Excerpt:

Chapter 5

“I don’t need to tell you how imperative it is to make contact with Donald.”

Tessa was behind her desk, addressing the three people in front of her: Ed with his long sad face; Casey, looking like a brow-beaten youth; and Penny, her angular features and square glasses contradicting her elfish pixie hair.

Tessa’s eyes were glistening. That was how Casey knew she was emotionally distressed. She was a very emotional woman, one of the first things about her that he had grasped from the start, perhaps too emotional. But in his book, that was more of a positive attribute of her character, rather than a flaw.

He knew as well as she did that Donald Darfield was one of the worse damaged of the vets, and now, having just reached the critical point where he was on the verge of confronting his demons, was extremely fragile.

Tessa leaned forward. “We’ve each tried on our cell phones, multiple times, but he won’t answer, so we’ll need the help of others…the ones in his group, those closest to him. We need to know where he would go. Since he basically lives here in our shelter, I wouldn’t waste time in homeless shelters. It’s been twenty-four hours now, and he may have gone out of town. We need to know where.”

“Yes, we’ll get on it,” Casey assured her.

“As for me, I need to see Jay’s father. His landline’s been disconnected. Anyone know the cell phone number…did Jay leave it with us?”

The despondent shaking of heads and shoulder shrugs gave the answer. Abruptly, Penny popped her head up. “Oh wait. How about his aunt?”

“Marshal’s sister? Good. Get it to me.”

Penny jumped up and exited.

“I’m taking a taxi as soon as we’re through here, which I think is right now.”

When Ed and Casey departed, Tessa called one of New York’s many private taxi services. A cab picked her up within fifteen minutes and she was on her way, across the George Washington Bridge and into New Jersey. When they got off the turnpike, Tessa gave meticulous directions to the home of Colonel Marshal Felson, Retired.

There were several vans and a small crowd of people outside the chain link fence enclosing the house. Now was the time for Tessa to try the number Penny gave her, counting on the possibility that Aunt Mae was in the house shielding her brother from the press.

A woman, by the gravelly nature of her voice an elderly woman, picked up the phone. “Hello?”

“Hi, is this Aunt Mae?” Tessa did not give her time to reply. “This is Dr. Thorpe; I was Jay’s counselor, and I need to speak to the Colonel. If you’re in the house, come to the gate and let me in.”
A brief silence. Apparently she was cupping the phone while conferring with Jay’s father. “Okay, I’m coming to let you in.”

When Aunt Mae, capped with a helmet of gray hair and dressed in a black frock with a discordant flower print, came out to let her in, the predictable surging of reporters commenced and was only quelled after Tessa promised them a comment on her way out. In the company of the elderly woman, she entered the two-story colonial and came face to face with Marshal Felson, standing in the sitting room with a drink of clear liquid in his hand. At six feet and three inches, broad at the shoulders, he imparted a formidable presence despite his weathered face. Silver hair chopped into the nubs of a buzz cut, bushy gray eyebrows, piercing light-blue eyes, and a prominently square jaw demanded accountability, despite his general appearance of an aged vet.

“Hello, Dr. Thorpe. Would you like a drink?"

"Yes, thank you. I’ll have whatever you’re having.”

The Colonel retreated to the kitchen in the back. His long- sleeved sky-blue shirt and pressed khakis displayed a subtle formality suggesting a relaxed respectability.

Aunt Mae, clasping her hands in front of her, fidgeted fretfully. “Sit down, dear,” she told Tessa, politeness always an expedient way to dispel the awkwardness.

Tessa took a seat on the damask sofa just as Felson arrived with her drink. She took a sip, surprised at the sweetness.

He looked at her with a sardonic smile. “Seven-Up. The hard stuff. None of that diet shit in this house.” His decorous mannerisms and strained joviality struggled to conceal the pent- up emotional turmoil brewing inside him.

She accepted the glass, saying, “Doesn’t surprise me. Very cool-headed of you to avoid alcohol. I can also sense you’re not grieving yet.”

“Not yet. You know, Betsy’s death took me harder. I mean with Jay going off to war, well…I know the risks of war. But I never expected this.” He sat down in the matching chair opposite her, looking up at the ceiling. “I’m still trying to sort this out.”

Tessa remained quiet, ready to listen.

“But you’re a clever gal, tell me what I’m feeling?"

"Rage.”

“Damn right!” He leaned forward from the depths of his armchair. “You know where I went today?” Felson did not wait for any reply. “I went to identify my son’s body. And the irony of it was…I really couldn’t…identify him. His face was so swollen, his eyes were just slits…his nose looked like a goddamned mushroom…his lips a bloody puffed up mess.” He took a gulp from his glass, then smacked his lips. “So…come to console me, Doctor?”

Tessa leaned forward, putting her glass on the coffee table. “Look, Colonel, I know we don’t see eye-to-eye on these matters—”

“No indeed! Your way is not my way. You just don’t understand. Marines are not ordinary people; they’re special. Going off to war, seeing terrible things, doing terrible things, that’s the goddamned job. If you can’t take it, join the goddamned Air Force, don’t become a Marine!” He took another slurp from his glass. “Going to see a doctor because you got bad memories is a sign of weakness, plain and simple.”

“And of course, you never have? Seen a doctor, I mean.”

“Damn right! So I guess your visit really isn’t necessary, is it?”

Tessa ignored his snotty rhetorical question. “Colonel, have you any idea at all of the whereabouts of Donny Darfield? He’s missing.”

“Donny, Jay’s friend, the colored boy?”

“African-American. Man.”

“Yes, of course…guess I’m old-fashioned. No, haven’t heard from him. Is that the only reason you came here?”

“No. What I really came to see you about is unity. We should bury the hatchet and work together.”

“Work together for what purpose? You know, I had to disconnect my phone…never mind the press…the Homeless Coalition, the VFW, Vietnam Veterans against the War, Iraqi Veterans Against the War, Veterans for Peace, you name it…my son is dead and everyone sees this as a political opportunity. So, tell me, what do you, Dr. Tessa Thorpe, want us to work together on, huh, what, promotion of your clinic?”

“No.” She paused, being purposely dramatic. “Justice.”

He looked at her with his stone-blue eyes, eventually slackening enough to digest her words. He put down the 7-Up he had been holding in his hand for fifteen minutes. “Ah, now we’re talking. So, what kind of justice do you expect my son to get?”

“None at all. If we sit idle.”

He leaned forward and whispered contemptuously. “You know they’re going to try and get out of this?”

Tessa, despite the gravity of the topic, leaned over the coffee table to meet his face and smiled maliciously. “Damn right,” she told him, parroting the colonel’s favorite response. “But we’re not going to let them.”

Felson grinned back. “It’s a deal. Mae’s got your number on her cell phone. I’ll call you. As for now, I’m going to take a valium, my favorite nighttime snack these days, and then hit the sack. I’ll deal with life tomorrow.”

On her way to the taxi, Tessa gave out her promised comment to the journalists, which was that she and Marshal Felson would await the town of Bruntfield’s response before making any comment.

Author's Note: This is book 2 of the Fae's Captive Series. Be sure to read book 1 first or risk being lost in the woods with a growly fae king.

A smile quirks up one side of his lips, and the goosebumps spread down my back. He’s handsome in a brutish, alien sort of way. But definitely more scary than anything else. Those dark eyes hide traps and barbs, I’m certain of it.

He edges closer and rests the tray next to me.

My stomach growls again, and I can’t take my eyes off the food. But should I eat it?

With a nudge, he pushes the tray even closer. I can smell the sweetness of the fruit and the doughy bread. Food is food, right? But what if it’s poisoned?

He says something, one word. Maybe it’s ‘eat’, since he gestures toward the tray with one of his bear paws.

My stomach makes the decision for me as it complains loudly and a hunger pang shoots through me. I reach for the bread and take a small piece, then put it in my mouth, testing it. Sweeter than the breads I’m used to, it melts on my tongue.

He nods, his dark eyes glinting, and he says the word again. It sounds like “brantath” to me. I form the word as best I can and repeat it back to him. His face lightens, and he tears another piece of bread from the round loaf and gives it to me.

I take it, swallowing it just as fast as the first. “So brantath means eat.” My stomach seems to rumble even more. “Or maybe it means bread?”

When he sits on the bed, I yank the fur up and pull my knees to my chest. The entire mattress shifts under his weight as he leans over and butters a bigger piece of bread and offers it to me.

“Brantath.” He leans closer. The scent from the fur and the shirt I’m wearing is the same one that wafts from him. It’s the promise of a cold winter’s night spent next to a roaring fire.

I take the bread, my fingers gently brushing against his. A low growl in his throat has me pulling back. It stops, but he gives me a predatory look, one that frightens me and sends heat blasting through me at the same time. Something’s wrong with me, but I’m too happy about the food to care.

I devour the bread, the butter creamy and delicious. He rises, the bed groaning with relief as he grabs a pitcher and pours water into a crystal cup, then hands it to me. I sniff it. No smell. But it’s not like I’m an expert poison sniffer or anything. I drink, mainly because I’m parched and don’t know when I’ll get my next chance at food or water.

He watches me swallow it down, then holds his hand out for the empty glass. When I reach out to give it to him, he stills, his eyes narrowing. Ferocious. That’s the only word for the look on his face. I clutch the fur and scoot away from him.

With fluid fury he reaches to the table behind him and draws an enormous silver sword.

A choked sound catches in my throat as he raises it. I’m going to die.

“Please, don’t.” It’s the only words I can get out as he lunges toward me.
