The Maharaja's Fake Fiancee

A scandal-averse Maharaja.
A free-spirited actress.
What do you get when you throw them together and add a fake engagement to the mix?
Either a match made-in-heaven or a royal disaster...

Nivy Sharma knows exactly what she needs - the freedom to be herself and follow her passion. Guess what she doesn’t need? A tailor-made husband.

When her meddlesome mother tries to throw her into the arms of a mom-approved suitor, Nivy runs the other way.

Right into the arms of the man who shattered her heart.

His Highness Veerendra Singh can recognise a pain-in-the-ass when he sees it. Especially when it falls into his arms.

Even if said pain-in-the-ass has legs that go on forever and lush lips that just beg to be kissed, Veer vows to run the other way. As he did once before...

But, when the marriage-minded princess of Tejpur sets her sights on him, Veer runs back into Nivy’s arms to propose a fake engagement.

When 'fake' starts to feel very real, Nivy and Veer have to decide what is important… long-held prejudices or the chance for a life with the only person they've ever loved.

Will this be their second chance at love or will their broken past ruin their hope for a shared future?

“Well, now that we have that mystery all cleared up...” I began, only to be interrupted rudely.
“Which one?”
His Idiotness stared at me with one eyebrow raised.
I had practised that move thousands of times in front of the mirror - unsuccessfully. So, it felt a bit unfair that someone I was rapidly coming to consider my enemy could do it so easily. Was there no justice in the world?
“I’m sorry, what?”
“Which mystery are you talking about? The one about Zombie’s name, or the one about how you came to swoon into my arms, or the even more important one about why you deigned to step on to Devgarh soil after five years of shunning us?”
If I kicked him in the shins like I really wanted to, there wouldn’t be any difference between me and this entitled royal brat. So, I gritted my teeth and forced a smile.
“The first two. The answer to the third is classified. If I tell you, I’ll have to kill you. And now that we’ve cleared up all those important questions, would it be possible for me to freshen up before I leave?”
“Leave? You can’t leave now, Nivy. We still have to get through all those boring speeches, beginning with Veer’s. I’ve got popcorn, don’t worry.”
“After the evening I’ve had, popcorn’s not enough, trust me, Jess,” I groaned.
“It is. Especially when you throw it at the speaker,” said Jessie with a wicked grin.
“What?” His Hottiness yelped.
I blinked. Then, I blamed the mental blip on exhaustion and hunger. I had meant His Haughtiness, of course.
I was over Veer. Completely and totally. Even if his arms had felt powerful and strong when they were wrapped around me. I did not subscribe to the popular fantasy of ‘Me Tarzan, You Jane’, but the feel of those arms around me made my legs go wobbly. It was just hunger, I told myself sternly, as I stood up straight and looked down my nose at him. At least, I tried to. It was slightly difficult to pull off when he was almost a head taller than me.
Veer stared down at me, and I could swear I saw his eyes flicker over my lips before he turned to his sister.
“Jessie, if you throw popcorn at anyone at all, Ma is going to bury you in the dungeon. Now, do you want to sneak Nivy up to your room before anyone sees her like this? I’m pretty sure those leaves in her hair aren’t accessories,” he suggested, with a grin.
I stuck my tongue out at him, and I realised that Veer was staring at my mouth again. Hungrily.
I cleared my throat and turned to Jessie. Unfortunately, my best friend was glaring at her phone.
“Ugh! His Deepness is looking for me. Probably wants me to strain his broccoli soup,” she said with a weary sigh.
Her brother frowned at her.
“Jessie, are you sure you like this guy?”
She sighed again.
“The jury is out on that, Veer. Let’s see,” she said with a grimace that had me worried.
I couldn’t imagine my take-no-shit friend allowing anyone to bulldoze her into marrying someone she didn’t like.
“Nivy, do you want to come in with me?”
I shook my head. Where not-so-Deep was, Anika was sure to be.
“Maybe later, Jess.”
She gave me a small smile and walked away. Veer turned to follow her.
I was planning to wait for Aryan to finish his speech and then drag him home. But Veer had barely taken a few steps when I saw Jay Malhotra heading towards us.
I took one look at the determined gleam in his eyes and realised that I needed to do something very drastic to drive him away before my mother hounded me into marrying him. I could think of nothing worse than being married to that vile mouth breather.
So, I did the most outrageous thing that I could think of.
I caught Veer by the hand and pulled him towards me.
“What...?”
“Shh! Just stand still,” I hissed.
Jay was almost in front of us, staring at us in confusion.
“What are you doing?”
“Umm, Veer, would you mind very much if I kissed you?”

EXCERPT:

Ice reached for the teardrop-shaped planchette. It was about the size of his palm and had a hole in the middle. When Jeni’s fingers rested across from his, they stared at each other, waiting for something to happen.

“Since you haven’t done this before, you might want to circle around the Ouija board allowing the momentum to take on a life of its own,” the medium prompted. “Use a very light touch.”

They followed her advice, gliding the wooden piece smoothly over the board.

A few moments later, the medium said, “Go ahead and ask if she’s here.”

Jeni closed her eyes, presumably thinking about the girl in the legend, since that was their theory on how and why the spirit appeared to her. After a minute or so, remembering the instruction sheet, Ice said, “We invite only good spirits to talk with us.” Then he asked, “Is there a spirit here?”

The planchette moved immediately, nearly jerking from beneath their fingers, startling Ice when it moved to the alphabet.

Scraping sounds filled the small room as the wooden piece trundled across the heavy cardboard. “H… E… L… P.”

Jeni’s eyes had snapped open when the planchette began moving, and Ice could feel the weight of her stare.

“What is your name?” he asked.

Again, the disc glided over the alphabet. “M,” Ice said. “A… R… I… E.” It continued to move. “L… L… E.”

“Marielle?” He exchanged a glance with Jeni as the planchette slid to “Yes.” Then he asked, “Are you the girl from the Kaskaskia legend?”

The piece twitched, but remained on the Yes.

Checking on Jeni, Ice was glad to see she looked more fascinated than freaked out. He felt no animosity from the presence and his rapidly beating heart was beginning to calm. “What do you need help with?”

A long scrape brought the planchette back to the alphabet. “S… A… V… E… M… Y… L… O… V… E.”

“Who is your love?” Ice asked.

“A… M… A… K… A… P… A.”

Feeling confident that they knew who they were actually talking to, Ice asked, “Do you need help crossing to the other side?”

The planchette slid toward the moon on the right corner of the board and rested briefly on “No.” Then it went back to the alphabet: “H… E… I… S… N… O… W… H… E… R… E.”

Frowning, Ice looked first at Jeni, then at the medium. “He’s not on the other side?”

The disc returned to “No.”

“Is that why you haven’t crossed over?”

Their fingers followed the shuffle of the wooden piece to “Yes.”

Ice thought for a moment about his next question and came up with, “Why do you think we can help you?”

This time the planchette moved to the center of the board, between the Yes and No. It twisted under their fingers causing Ice and Jeni to hold their arms in a contorted position. When it stopped, the narrow end of the teardrop pointed at Jeni.

Her eyes widened. In the smallest voice, Jeni asked, “Is it pointing at me?”

Ice asked, “You think Jeni can help you?”

The indicator shifted left to “Yes,” then continued to spell out: “S… H… E… K… N… O… W… S.”

Jeni flinched, deep creases forming on her brow. She drew her lips into a pucker.

Reading her confusion, Ice asked, “What does she know that will help you?”

“F… I… N… D… H… I… M.”

Something Wicked
Emery Nicolson
(Lockhart Legacy, #1)
Publication date: March 1st 2021
Genres: Adult, Paranormal, Romance, Urban Fantasy

Something wicked this way comes…

You’d think being the descendant of powerful witches would grant me the power to sort out my life, right? But you’d be wrong. I’m stuck in a rut, disdained by my family, and my romantic life is a disaster. Oh, and did I forget to mention that I have no magic?

When a cursed heirloom is stolen, I should stay out of it and leave the retrieval to those better equipped but everything seems to lead back to me…

With the help of an enigmatic bounty hunter, I may be able to clear my name and retrieve the artefact before death and chaos are unleashed upon my beloved city but doing so could cost me everything — including my life.

EXCERPT:

It feels like I have just fallen asleep when I’m awoken by someone obnoxiously ringing my doorbell, over and over and over again.

Blinking sticky eyes open, I roll over and check the time on my phone screen. Seven o clock! Who in their right bloody mind goes knocking on someone’s door at that time on a Saturday? It is cruel! It is unnatural! But whomever it is they are not buggering off like I hoped they would, leaving me no choice but to get out of bed and answer the door.

“Alright, alright! I’m coming!” I yell, stomping down the hall. I flick on a light switch and peek through the peephole. “Bitch!” I shout through the door as I start releasing the locks.

There are quite a few, so it’s a bit of a slow process, but when you live in a basement apartment, I feel you can’t be too careful.

“Stop your whining Lockhart! I’ve got to be at work in an hour and details can’t wait!”

Pulling the door open, I am faced with the happy smiling face of my BFF Sarah. I have a strong dislike for morning people but at least this pre-dawn menace has the decency to come bearing gifts.

“Do I smell bacon?” I ask, as she marches past me with a brown bag of goodness and a cup holder with two coffees.

“Hell yes, it’s bacon. You think I’d be stupid enough to wake the bear without bringing a sacrifice?” She calls as she makes her way to the front room. “Bring plates in won’t you!”

“Yes dear,” I mumble, more to myself than to her as I yawn and do exactly as I’m told.

Born of Fire

Born of Fire
Kella McKinnon
Publication date: January 21st 2021
Genres: Adult, Historical, Romance, Time-Travel

More than thirteen centuries ago, the Highlands were ruled by a powerful Pictish King whose ferocity in battle was as legendary as his honor and devotion to his people. When his trusted advisor had a vision that the Picts could one day disappear from the Earth, King Bridei charged one family with protecting and preserving the language and lore of the Picts through the generations to come.

Born into this ancient family line, Nessa Brodie feels both the weight of her responsibility and the desire to pursue her own dreams, until a series of fateful events lands her in the distant past. As she navigates her new world and all of the uncertainty and fear that comes with it, Nessa begins to realize that she is destined to be the completion of a circle begun long before she was born. Torn between the life and love she left behind, and the captivating passion of an untamed warrior-king, Nessa learns that even the path laid out by fate is never easy or straight.

EXCERPT:

“Well? Do you want to have her killed tonight with the others?” Namet stood before him, waiting for his answer.

Bridei was eating his dinner. Or at least he was trying to. This was the fourth interruption he’d had to endure since he’d sat down. “No. I need to know who she is first, and who she answers to. There is too much at stake not to know each and every one of my enemies, large or small.” He paused, chewing thoughtfully. “She could be completely innocent, of course.” But maybe that was wishful thinking. The lass’s fathomless green eyes told him nothing except that she was lying.

“Or she could have been sent to seduce you into telling your secrets. Or to poison you.” Namet always argued the other side. It was one of his many roles as chief counselor to the King.

“Then why would the old man be with her? He certainly does not put one in the mind of seduction. Wouldn’t she have come alone, if that was the plan? Played on our sympathies as a woman lost and by herself?” He shook his head, taking another bite of food from the carved wooden bowl. He could have dined from golden plates, of course, but he preferred simpler things. “I need to know more. Bring her to the fires tonight. I would have her see what happens to those who cross me. Perhaps then she will talk. And Namet…”

“Yes?”

Bridei pointed his spoon at him with narrowed eyes. “I would never be seduced by any woman. Know that.”

He wouldn’t have anyone, even his most trusted counselor, thinking he could be weakened in any way. Especially not by feminine wiles. He had had women throwing themselves at him since the day he’d become King, even before that, and never once had he let one touch his heart. Never for a moment had he been ruled by lust or need. He was always in control. He was King.

The old warrior’s mouth curled up at one corner just a little as he nodded. He had been around long enough to know that sometimes a woman came along that a man had no hope of walking away from. Even being a king didn’t make one immune to matters of the heart.
