Everyday Enchantments is a love letter to the magic of everyday life, the sweet moments and the profound that we often overlook in our hurry to get from one place to the next. What if we had the power to unplug from our daily hustle and bustle and conjure a more profound way of living rooted in natural mysticism?

We do. All it takes is the whispered wish for more everyday enchantment breathed onto a dandelion head. This collection of essays reminds us to escape into the ordinary, find beauty in a simple cup of tea or rereading a beloved novel—and joyfully let our world turn upside down when synchronicity strikes in the form of wrong turns down forgotten lanes and unexpected midnight conversations with the moon.

This book is a study in what it means to live deliciously, joyfully, and magically. And it’s an invitation to conjure your own bliss—-because let’s face it: we could all use a little more magic in our lives.

Fiction
Date Published: January 2018

 photo add-to-goodreads-button_zpsc7b3c634.png

Sonny Galas is an only child being raised by his mother-a widow---and the loving help of his grandfather, also widowed. Living in a Santa Monica apartment complex owned by 'Grandpa' all is well and average for this close-knit family until a certain French family come into the picture, in need of a place to rent. They soon show their colors in various ways, topping it off by slapping a suit on their patient, kind landlord. Sonny's family sees no better option than selling their only asset-the apartments-and getting far away from their Lawyer-packing tenants. Far, as in 'leaving the country', and this is where their true adventure begins. South of the border becomes their new home.

From their journey through third-world narrow roads, small towns where no English is spoken, to long, hot unending desert roads and through humid coastal towns they continue toward their big city destination, Guadalajara, where their life begins and they encounter everything and everyone from kind helpers to con-artists and crazies and from strangers to good friends, both Mexican and American. From young boy to teenager, as the years pass, Sonny sees it all: his family's ups and downs, the country's ups and downs with its own political third-world corruption, and his own transformation from a simple boy in a new country to a growing youth, fully fluent in Spanish; a devilish yet fun-loving teenager now with roots firmly planted and sprouting happily in his new home, his new country. From the adventures and joys of boyhood with his friends and pals to the wild days through grade school, junior high and high school with the opportunities given him as a bi-lingual kid to living through the set-backs that could trouble any family-Mexican or American-even scare of the faint of heart, he takes it all in; after all, now he's Mexican. The fiestas, the friends, the awesome busy modern streets of Guadalajara in the early Seventies to the early Eighties, Guadalajara, the country's capital of Mariachis.

EXCERPT:

Setting the wards is more than a walk around the perimeter, calling out to the elements. They’re keyed into the very being and require blood to take. Cutting my palm, I bring forth fire in the other hand and allow my blood to drip onto the ground.

By Fire I ward thee:

Guard this space from all ill will,

And those who wish me harm.

Heat engulfs me, blowing back the longish strands of my hair, and drawing a line of sweat onto my forehead. I’d never had manifestations like this. My stickh was with the dead. I continue on, ignoring the newly-formed desert in my mouth.

By Wind I ward thee:

Guard this space from all ill will,

And those who wish me harm.

Droplets of blood disappear into the earth as if the land itself is making a personal contract. The incense burning on the ground releases a thick puff of sage and cedarwood laden smoke. Maybe it is. A gust of wind threatens to knock me off my feet as its snags at my jacket with hungry hands. I stumble, swaying like a drunkard. The intensity fades to a gentle breeze, and I right myself.

By Earth I ward thee:

Guard this space from all ill will,

And those who wish me harm.

Rumbling from deep beneath my feet shakes the earth, pitching me back like a horse unexpectedly bucking its rider. Blinking, I find myself ass over kettle. I scramble up, and ride the undulating ground like a surfer on a longboard. Feet planted, I try to flow with the vibrations, instinctively knowing participation is required.

This is my time to prove myself worthy to inherit. Old magic such as this can be nearly sentient. Everything stops abruptly. I fall forward. A mound of dirt piles up beside me. I tense, readying to defend myself from a nocturnal rodent. A tree sapling emerges.

By water I ward thee:

Guard this space from all ill will

And those who wish me harm.

A streak of lightning slashes through the night angrily. A loud clap of thunder vibrates the ground, and the sky opens above me. Cool rain splatters against my clothes, soaking me to the skin. I finish the walk, completing the circuit. Heaviness slams into my chest. I hit the ground, dazed. My vision darkens, and I feel it. The house is built upon a ley line. The wards take their energy from the source in exchange for protection.

Storm clouds crowd in as rain continues to come in sideways. Thunder booms, performing a duet with the crackling lightning streaking across the night sky. I can taste the magic in the air. Mother’s succession of power has begun. Sitting in the mud, I tilt my head back and open my mouth, swallowing down water to quench my thirst as I try to adjust to the drastic changes my magic has undergone. Energy races inside of me, stretching and reshaping. My skin feels too tight.

Publication date: March 13th 2020
Genres: Adult, Paranormal, Reverse Harem, Romance

The Raven Academy could save my life… if it doesn’t kill me first.

Waitressing might pay my bills, but it’s my cage fighting at night that really cranks my gears. Until some weird hidden power helped me win a fight. Now no one wants to step in the ring with me.

And my life is going from weird to worse. The same night a werewolf tried to tear out my throat, a guy shows up telling me magic exists AND goes on to prove it. And, oh yeah, my life is in danger now that my abilities have started to show.

Apparently the answer is for me to follow this hottie professor to some Raven Academy and learn magic. School was never my jam, but at least this one comes with a hot demon who’s helping me train and a sexy fellow student who seems to be interested in more than just study hall. Throw in Professor Sexy Pants tutoring me privately to improve my magic, and it’s every girl’s dream.

Until I find out I’m part of some save-the-world prophecy, and the fate of all supernatural creatures rests on my shoulders. Great.

If my sexy consorts and I can’t pummel my magic into shape soon, we’re all doomed…

EXCERPT:

He was huge. Built. The kind of body you only got form hours at the gym. And I don’t mean the gym where you use weight machines. I mean the kind where you flip over huge tires, do burpees with fifty-pound kettlebells, the kind of shit that makes you tough not only in body but in mind, too.

Or maybe those muscles just came naturally to a demon.

Jesus, I was standing in front of a demon.

“Hi.” I raised one of the mugs. “I brought you some coffee. It’s early, and I know I sure need some caffeine. You wouldn’t believe the night I had.” I was babbling and I didn’t care. It seemed safer than to stand in silence.

“I didn’t know how you take it so I took a guess. No cream, two sugars. You know, kinda like you. Dark and foreboding on the outside but secretly sweet?” God, please let that be him.

He stared at me, face impassive.

I swallowed.

Finally, finally, he spoke. “Are you going to bring it to me or do I have to drink it from here?”

The low throb of his voice had me humming in places I hadn’t hummed before. At that moment I would have let him drink anything. My blood, the moisture gathering in my panties…but he wanted coffee.

“Oh.” I cleared my throat. “Right.” I stumbled forward, breathless, until I stood before him. I had to tilt my head back to look at him, but it was worth any neck ache.

He took the mug. I was hoping his fingers would brush against mine, see what his luminescent skin felt like, but he grasped the cup by its rim.

I cocked my head “Didn’t you use to have tattoo on your neck?” There had been a lot about the rest of his body that had been distracting, but I was pretty sure there had been ink on his skin.

He took a long sip, keeping his eyes planted on my face.

I shifted my weight. He wasn’t going to answer. Rude bastard.

He took finished his coffee, let out a breath, then placed his free hand on my sternum.

Before I could either protest or enjoy it, my body jerked then flew backwards. My coffee cup left my hand seconds before my ass hit the hard wood. I tumbled ass over teakettle until whatever power had thrown me ran out of steam.

Enter Dr. Vivaan Kapoor, cute, hot, squiggle-worthy. The younger brother of her cousin's prospective groom, he’s got the squiggle factor in spades. The only catch? He's never been married and is years younger than Alisha. Basically, completely off-limits.

And then there is Arjun. Widowed, older than her by the right number of years and a genuinely nice guy. He's Vivaan’s cousin and a so-called perfect match for Alisha. The problem is, Alisha’s squiggle-o-meter refuses to budge for him.

What will Alisha choose? A lifetime together with the 'right' man or a chance at happiness with the 'wrong' one?

Hush of Storm & Sorrow
L. Penelope
(Earthsinger Chronicles, #2.5)
Publication date: March 16th 2020
Genres: Adult, Fantasy

While battling a vicious winter storm, Roshon ol-Sarifor, along with his father and twin brother are kidnapped and thrust on a journey that takes them far from home—leaving his sister Jasminda believing them dead. Their captors claim that the Queen Who Sleeps is behind their abduction—She wants them to reclaim a magical object hidden in a deadly part of the ocean. But a violent encounter with a gang of pirates forces the ol-Sarifors to seek refuge on a smuggler’s ship, where Roshon meets a girl unlike any he’s encountered before.

Ani Summerhawk never met a risk she didn’t take. But with a price on her head, she and her older brother need to make a quick getaway from a deal gone bad. Every ship in the sea is seeking the reward for returning her to a ruthless captain who believes she’s his property. But when her brother agrees to transport three passengers to a dangerous destination, Ani’s heart is put on the line for the first time.

The two families battle a treacherous sea, greedy sailors, and a powerful mage as they struggle to retrieve and secure the ancient artifact. And the attraction between a high-spirited girl and a cautious boy comes to a head when they discover that their biggest fight just might be with each other.

Set two years before the events of Song of Blood & Stone, this action-packed novella answers the question of what happened to Jasminda’s family and sets the stage for the events in Cry of Metal & Bone (Earthsinger Chronicles, book 3).

EXCERPT:

Ani Summerhawk bounced on her toes. The anticipation of negotiations always made her giddy. Her brother, Tai, shot her a dark look, and she struggled to wrangle her excitement. Still, she couldn’t stop the tapping of her foot as the shadowy figures of four men approached.

The warehouse serving as their meeting place was lit with overhead bulbs that cast pools of light every twenty paces or so. The rest of the space was in shadow with the bulk of the crates and boxes forming an obstacle course of sorts. If things went wrong, there were plenty of places to hide, and she’d already scoped out the quickest paths to the two exits. Her exhilaration ratcheted up a notch, and she felt as if she were vibrating out of her skin.

“If you can’t behave . . .” Tai began, speaking out the side of his mouth.

“Don’t try to police me,” Ani said through clenched teeth. “I’m not a child.”

Tai snorted, and Ani replied with an elbow to his arm. Now fifteen, she had been a part of their father’s smuggling operation since before she could walk. Father had taken her out with him on his runs and had never once expected her to stand quietly at his side during a negotiation. Then again, Tai did things a bit differently than Father had, and it was probably for the best. Maybe if Father had been more like Tai he’d still be alive.

She gritted her teeth and stilled the constant movement of her limbs, determined to try things her brother’s way. The interior of the warehouse smelled of mildew and mothballs. Mik, Tai’s first mate and best friend, had found it for them in a seedier section of the already-seedy docks of Portside. He’d stayed behind on the ship to ready it for a speedy departure. The men who stepped into the nearest cone of light were fellow Raunians, so Mik’s preparedness would likely come in handy.

“Bor,” Tai said, addressing the largest of the men. “You’re looking well.”

Ani held back a snicker. This Bor fellow resembled the creature his name sounded like. Squat and meaty, with a piggish nose and deep-set eyes, he was just about the ugliest Raunian she’d ever seen. His hair was dyed the same blue as Tai’s and Ani’s, but Bor had done his in vertical stripes, alternating with its natural black, which lent him a deranged appearance.

Unsurprisingly, he had no marriage markings tattooed on his face. Aside from his siokka, or family crest, along with his captain’s and taxpayer’s tattoos, he bore five horizontal lines on his left cheekbone. He’d served five years of hard labor. Not a man to be trifled with.

“What’s this exclusive haul you’ve brought me here to see, Summerhawk?” Bor crossed his heavy arms.

Tai leaned against a crate, which towered several handspans above his head. His pose was casual and carefree, but only to those who didn’t know him. Ani could see that beneath his cool exterior he was on alert. Bor’s reputation as a hard bargainer had been well-earned. The presence of the three large men behind him hinted at exactly how he liked to negotiate. If they were going to make any money on this deal, and leave with their lives and limbs intact, they had to be vigilant.
