Owl Eyes: A Fairy Tale
Molly Lazer
Publication date: March 20th 2018
Genres: Fairy Tales, Fantasy, Young Adult

Nora knows three things: she is a servant, her parents are dead, and she lives in the kitchen house with her adoptive family. But her world is torn apart when she discovers that her birth father has always been right there, living in the house she serves.

This discovery leads Nora to more questions. Why was she thrown in an ash-covered room for asking about her father? Why is a silver-bladed knife the only inheritance from her birth mother? Why is magic forbidden in her household—and throughout the province of the Runes? The answers may not be the ones Nora hoped for, as they threaten a possible romance and her relationship with the adoptive family she loves.

With the announcement of a royal ball, Nora must decide what she is willing to give up in order to claim her stolen birthright, and whether this new life is worth losing her family—and herself.

EXCERPT:

“Hi.”

I shot up from the bed, screaming, and scrambling backwards before falling off the mattress onto the planked wood floor. A boy crouched next to me with his elbows balanced on his knees and his chin resting against his palms. He wore an old, light blue shirt that was much too large for his small frame. A piece of hay stuck up from the mop of brown hair on his head.

“Jack!” Liana called from the kitchen. “Don’t wake Nora.”

“Too late,” the boy called back.

“Who are you?” I pressed my hand to my chest to keep my heart in place. “Why were you watching me sleep?”

“I wasn’t watching you sleep,” the boy said. “Peter and me just got back from the Market, and I got up here and found you on my mattress.”

“Your—” I sputtered. I took a deep breath and tried to inhale the motherwort from the candle. “This is my bed.”

“Well, no one said it was yours, did they? I claimed this bed when I got here, and no one made a peep.” He crossed his arms and looked at the floor. “They were probably too worried if you were okay to care about where I was sleeping. You looked pretty rotten.”

“I was sick,” I said, staking my spot on the mattress again.

“No, I mean you actually looked like you’d rotted. Your skin was all black. Are you sure you’re not a spirit who’s talking to me now?”

I grabbed his arm and pressed my palm to his. “No spirit,” I said. “I’m here.”

He grinned. I shoved him on the floor.

“I’m Jack,” he said as he picked himself up.

“Nora.”

“Are you Greta and Peter’s daughter?”

“No.” I regretted the words as soon as they came out of my mouth. They were true, but I chewed them like a lie. “I mean yes. Sort of.”

“How are you only ‘sort of’ their daughter?”

“I mean, yes, I’m their daughter. They’re just not my real parents. My real parents are dead. Or gone. Or something. My mother is dead.” I was rambling. I pulled the candle closer to the mattress, hearing Greta’s voice in my ear warning me that the flame could catch the straw on fire. I didn’t care. I lowered my face and breathed in.

“Does your ma’s spirit ever talk to you?” Jack asked.

“What?” I stared at him. “That’s stupid. How old are you that you still think that can happen?”

“I’m thirteen.” Defensiveness crept into his voice. “And I only asked because I can talk to my pa anytime I want to. Or at least I could when we lived in the Vale. His spirit lives in the river there.”

Sir Alcander had hired a crazy person to work in the kitchen house.

“No, he doesn’t.”

“He does so! I’ll show you sometime, and you’ll see.”

I flopped back down on the mattress and rolled over so I was facing away from him, pulling the candle to the other side with me. I could feel Jack watching me.

“Your ma is nice,” I said, still not facing him.

“Thanks. I think so too.” There, finally, was something we agreed on. “I’m going to bed now. You can keep your spot. I didn’t want it anyway.” I peeked over my shoulder. Jack lay down on a new mattress I hadn’t noticed next to the wall.

“Thanks,” I said. In the dim light of the candle, his eyes looked almost gold. I smiled.

“It’s all right,” he said. “I can sleep almost anywhere as long as I’ve got enough space. I don’t like feeling closed up in small places.” The dark room pulsed behind me. “Me neither.”

Now we had two things in common.

Prologue

The streets were desolate and cold. James shook off the chill that shot through his bones as he pulled the skull cap slightly down over his eyebrows not leaving very much of his face to be seen. He took his time moving to the ATM machine. He had transferred a small portion of his money from the offshore account to his account in the states. He had been in Burr Ridge for almost a week now. Nothing or no one, other than Witherspoon, was connecting him to what happened to Teresa or the others he'd dumped in the river over the past year. He knew Witherspoon would never speak and their employer had no idea who it was and didn't want to know. He felt bad about not trying to bring Teresa. He contemplated that she was better off without him. He slid the bank card into the machine, keyed in the code followed by the amount he wanted to withdraw, and then waited for the machine to spit the bills out. Once the money was out he retrieved his cash and card and went back to his car. He had nothing to worry about yet he still felt compelled to get out of Illinois. He wanted to see his sister before he left because he didn't know when he would see her again. As he climbed into his car and started the engine, he heard the sound of a click behind his head.
"You can have the money and car,” he said. The person behind him remained silent.
James spoke again. “It doesn't have to end badly. I haven't seen your face so you can just take the cash and go. Everyone's happy."

“This isn't just a robbery,” the woman's said as she pulled the trigger.

Chapter 1

The prow of our longship broke the waves, the salt spray stinging my eyes. My legs bent, and my feet shifted naturally at the rise and fall of the sea. Always, it was the same, when the unfurling sail caught the wind and the ship surged forward. Like when you put heels to horse and she runs. The same. My spirits rising. The sun glistening off the surface of the sea.
This was more to my liking than learning the ways of the realm, for surely my royal Danish blood was many parts seawater.
I turned and watched my father, King Cnute, standing with his back to the mast. At forty years, Cnute was past his prime now, though he still maintained the strength of his sword arm, and the force of his will could not be broken. With his red cloak wrapped around him and the bronze circlet on his brow, my father looked out toward the other longships as if his gaze alone was enough to gather them in, to keep the wolf pack together. Four drakkars or longships, sixty men, and a string of horses, an adequate force for a raid, but a mere fighting band in a battle.

When Rosie's marriage suddenly ends one night in Sydney, nothing makes sense any more. She doesn't know what to do next. Her sister, Juliette, suggests she come and live where she is — in Lucknow,  a town in Central Victoria, that they knew in their childhood. It doesn't seem to offer much at first. But her life changes in ways she had not thought possible. Lucknow isn't just a romance, it's about life in a small country Australian town.

Praise for Lucknow:

"Heartbreak, comedy, tragedy, farce, romance, secrets, even love. Annie Hall lifts the lid on the way things are in this Australian country town with the beguiling name of Lucknow." — Carmel Bird

Excerpt

While Hamish was being minded by Mrs Pickett for a couple of hours, Juliette and Rosie grabbed their bathers and headed out to the old reservoir. It was the perfect time for a swim, the sun had real warmth, the wind held its breath, there was a clarity of light in the air and the fragrance of eucalyptus and spice. The old reservoir shimmered and sang with bird calls that afternoon. Save for two fishermen sitting on the levee wall mute and still as statues, Juliette and Rosie had the place to themselves. Near the water’s edge they baked on bare rock like lizards, their towels rolled under their heads for pillows. Juliette lay on her back staring at the sky while Rosie lay on her front gazing at the water.

‘I heard about your quiet night at the pub,’ Juliette said. ‘Jade said you were announced on stage as single. Really putting it out there, aren’t you Rosie? Next it will be an ad in the local paper.’

‘I had no idea Eloise would do that,’ Rosie said. ‘It was so embarrassing.’

‘You don’t know the half of it,’ Juliette said. ‘If you heard what they were saying about you.’

‘Like what?’

Juliette looked at her sister, and didn’t want to hurt her feelings. ‘It’s a wonder you weren’t raffled off like a tray of meat.’

There was a pause.

‘Eloise grew up here. People know her, they don’t know you. You’ve just arrived.’

She looked at her sister, always slight, like a teenager in her blue bikini with yellow buttercups. She didn’t look strong enough to have had Hamish or gone through a torrid marriage breakdown. She is tougher than she looks, Juliette thought. If she didn’t physically show signs of suffering she must have felt it somewhere. But where did Rosie feel it? wondered Juliette.

‘I know I’ve just arrived, Juliette,’ Rosie said, yawning. ‘To another age, it seems, as well as another place.’

‘In Lucknow, you must take care,’ Juliette said earnestly. ‘Gossip spreads faster than a virus, it’s more invisible than hepatitis. It just floats around and somewhere decisions are made about you, your reputation is decided. It might not be the truth but it is what will pass as the truth.

‘You will be stuck with it. And, and,’ Juliette said, warming to her point, ‘it will be very hard once your reputation is fixed to change it. It will stick with you no matter what you do. If people find that you vary from your reputation then they will find it curious, but they won’t disbelieve the gossip.’

Rosie thought about what Juliette was saying. ‘If people can’t distinguish the truth from gossip then why is their opinion of any value?’

‘They only know what they hear,’ Juliette said. ‘You need to take care.’

The smooth grey rocks were hot beneath their bodies. Rosie felt sweat beginning to trickle and the water looked invitingly cool.

‘I’m going in,’ she told Juliette. ‘Race you.’

As warm and brown as a bottle of beer in the shallows, the water was chilly and fizzy as champagne at waist height. Rosie dived under and came up tingling with shock at how cold it was. Juliette was already ahead, arms and legs slicing cleanly through the water. Rosie set off like a threshing machine, churning the water white as she overtook Juliette and raced the one kilometre to the other side. She stood in the shallows, her ribs heaving and subsiding as she gasped for air, her body bent, head down near her knees, eyes swimming with red, brain nearly blacking out from a lack of oxygen. Juliette came up behind her, the water draining off her body in silvery rivulets and watched her sister.

‘You always push things,’ she said, casually. ‘You always go too far.’

Book Excerpt

Tatsu didn’t mind sleeping under the leaves, but Yudai’s agitation seemed to grow as the sky darkened. He paced back and forth between two ancient tree trunks with his hands clasped behind his back, over and over, until the stars came out.

“You’re going to have to sleep eventually,” Tatsu pointed out, voice mild, once the moon was high overhead. It earned him a growl in reply. “Please just sit down.”

“This clearing will be dead by morning,” Yudai snapped. When he turned to retrace his steps again, Tatsu could see the twist of his fingers clenched together in tight fists.

“You can’t do anything about it, so there’s no point in blaming yourself. It’s probably just making the whole thing worse.”

The look Yudai threw him was dubious at best, but evidently, the possibility was difficult to ignore. Yudai eventually settled himself down between two patches of yellow-green weeds, and he ran his finger over his lip a few times before his eyes flickered up towards Tatsu. “Distract me.”

“You could ask nicely,” Tatsu said.

One corner of Yudai’s mouth quirked upward. “I could,” he agreed, and said nothing more.

“Did you know that my mother had other children?”

Yudai blinked and sat back, face slackening. “Good distraction."

He's a special forces operator, a trained assassin. He marries into an organized crime family. Not an ordinary crime family, but one with a tradition and specialty in murder for hire.

About the Author

Howard Weiner is a recent addition to the literary genre of fiction. Writing mysteries, thrillers, crimes—with a touch of romance—an approach described by one reader as “one bubble off.”

Many authors sharing the genre have characters whose fortune is determined by others. They literally have dodged the bullet that otherwise would have killed them. Weiner’s characters make their own fortune—good or bad—and they live with the results.

Weiner’s own experiences are blessed with no small number of noteworthy characters and events. He brings these slightly off-kilter individuals to life, complete with their own stories and dramas. Like the child prodigy in his first novel, "It Is Las Vegas After All", who comes to the starting edge of adulthood and then loses the approval of his doting parents, the sponsorship of one of America’s great institutions of higher education, and gains the enmity of his girlfriend’s father—an international arms dealer—to become a home-grown terrorist operating on U.S. soil.

A survivor of rich, nuanced bureaucracies in the public and private sector, Weiner writes about characters whose career choices and decisions are morally questionable. A student of personal behavior in complex circumstances, Weiner brings these often cringe-worthy characters to life. Some are amoral, others immoral in a narrow slice of their lives, yet they otherwise look and act like people we all know from work or even childhood. Like one of the female leads in his novel, "Serendipity Opportunity", an out-of-the-box thinker who flunks most of life’s basic relationship tests, yet she is someone you never want pursuing you in the cause of justice. There’s a former foreign security official who uses his protected status as a witness for federal prosecutors to provide cover for his own mayhem and murder in Weiner’s third novel, "Bad Money".

Many of Weiner’s stories are born out of real life events: The mix-up in luggage claim at the airport in, "Bad Money", the chronic high school slacker in "Serendipity Opportunity" whose one stroke of good fortune creates his opportunity to perpetrate a complex series of frauds, or the brilliant student in "It Is Las Vegas After All" who uses his prodigious talents toward an evil end.

As a former federal official, Weiner can neither confirm nor deny having the highest security clearances in classified security programs. Yet, his knowledge of the dark web, criminal organizations, and security organizations takes stories from the popular press to the next level.

MEET K.M. ECKE

Hailing from the original birthplace of the atomic bomb,  Los Alamos, NM, K.M. Ecke is an organic, free-range, preservative-free, philosopher-poet using universal truth to battle cultural insanity. Ecke, which is German for ‘corner’, is the child of a physicist and musician and  grew up at the corner of creativity and logic. After ten years of existential exploration and creative experimenta-
tion, he releases his debut novel Moral Panic, along with an album of lyrically-focused songs, Change of Mind via his independent creative collective The Dream Flow.

Ecke strives to deliver a strong story with inherent value to his readers. The author is well-versed in writing, including essays, songs and poetry, the last of which the author finds the most  efficient form of expression, and thus, the best way to improve his writing practice.

Initially intending for law school,  a business law class changed his direction, and Ecke chose to pursue writing, soul-searching and creative projects. After several years of odd jobs learning about different pieces of the world, he began his own private music teaching business and attended Colorado Film School for a year and a half to study filmmaking. After 18-months in his program, he veered to his own path and established Dream Flow Media, the home to all of his creative endeavors; publishing, music and all additional branches of the many-faceted visionary. Along with his own creations, he strives to bring other artists into the fold to develop a creative collective for a variety of multimedia projects.

Ecke also works as a filmmaker for local non-profits and bands, and hopes one day to see Moral Panic on the big screen. The author lives in Denver, Colorado and hosts a storytelling micro-podcast Myths, Metaphors, and Morality. For more info, visit the author online at TheDreamFlow.com.

GET TO KNOW THE AUTHOR

Moral Panic hits on some very real, very intense topics! Can you tell me where you came up with the idea for your story?
I’ve thought digital surveillance was a really interesting issue for several years. It obviously holds a lot of potential for drama, but I wanted to be sure to avoid the usual clichés of such a story. Oftentimes, it’s a future dystopian civilization where a faceless police force is enforcing some arbitrary set of rules, but I wanted to explore the real-life applications and development of such a group.

For Moral Panic, I wanted to explore the collision of the most extreme political, ideological, and technological elements of our modern world. I had been writing songs and making music for years, but I kept trying to fit much bigger ideas into my poetry and my albums. Eventually I decided music wasn’t as appropriate for the big ideas I wanted to take on so I decided to write the book to give me more room to explore those ideas.

So we can also acknowledge the title of  ‘musician’ to your name?
Music and poetry are big parts of my creative development. Music is the language of raw emotion. Once you start adding lyrics on top of it, it starts to morph a little bit, but instrumental music is the best way to capture a mood. I majored in music composition in college and my mother was a professional violinist and educator, so it’s always been a big piece of how I see myself as a creator. These are songs I had the melodies and chords written for quite some time, but I decided to rewrite the lyrics within the past six months to address some of the other ideas I’ve been considering outside of the novel. There are a couple of similar themes in the songs as there are in the book (truth, clarity of mind as the antidote of distortion) but they are definitely separate works.

Can you give us a little insight into your musical style and inspiration for Moral Panic?
The music is a collection of lyrically-driven modern folk-rock songs. I wanted the lyrics to be the focus so I didn’t do  any additional instrumentation outside of the guitar and vocals except for the first track, Reason and Rhyme. That one is intended to jar you from whatever complacent state of mind you’re in before the rest of the album soothes you with truth.

What do you think will surprise readers most about your story?
I hope the political manipulation of the social media sphere piques their interest. It’s insane how deep down you can drill on social media advertising analytics. That was one of my odd jobs after college. All of the media manipulation in the book is totally possible with today’s media tools and Jacobs’ scene where she manipulates the minds of certain demographics with fake quotes from the current Governor should be very unsettling to people. We’re entering an age where everything will be fakeable. Even now, most people can’t even see the content other people are seeing. It will be imperative that people go to primary sources to get their information or they will simply be arguing over the wrong things.

Were any parts of your story inspired by real-life events?
Part of this book considers what happens to people who are publicly shamed or fired for some reason. I’m not arguing whether different punishments are justified or not. Rather, I think it depends on the specific example. I did find it an interesting mental exercise to think about what happens to those people. The most surreal experience was  seeing some of the events in the book mirrored in the real world while I was creating it. The most striking example was the James Damore firing at Google.

The Social Justice group in the book is completely assembled by these type of lost souls. I really think that absent a productive dialogue, people’s ideas will become more extreme when their lives are destroyed by saying or doing things in a less than tactful way.

What kind of research did you have to do for your book?
I looked into human trafficking, digital surveillance, and social engineering mostly. A friend of mine works for a company that lost a good deal of money on a phishing email wire transfer scam so there’s a scene in the book which is based on that experience.

A lot of the surveillance stuff I was just generally aware of because it’s so pervasive, but there were definitely some dark days spent diving into the world of human trafficking. It’s a really complex issue and the stories I read were horrific. I modeled every example of the human trafficker characters from bits and pieces I collected from various news reports, mostly from Vice. One was about a woman who was abducted in Nicaragua on the pretenses of getting a small business loan and then spent 5+ years in sexual slavery for several cartel leaders in Mexico. That research also made me think quite a bit about the current immigration discussion. A lot of the drug cartels already have the supply chains to get drugs into the U.S. so they’re  starting to offer passage to America using those same supply lines to people who can afford it.

That would be incredibly difficult to spend so much time on! This is all very topical though. Given today’s political climate, how do you think your story may end up impacting your readers?
I hope this story serves as a partial antidote to the type of fake news which is so prevalent on social media. The only ameliorants to the effects of that type of manipulation are educated skepticism and being aware of our own cognitive biases. I think people can get too caught up in the drama of politics instead of focusing on the real world policy which actually affects us. As someone who’s worked in media production, I know what’s possible to fake and that knowledge makes me very skeptical of any story that has really obvious political motivations.

It’s also possible the usage of Social Justice as a name for a vigilante group will be criticized by some people. I originally developed the story around that name to imply “Social Media Justice”, but I’m sure it will be misunderstood at some point. I guess it shows some of my ignorance to the online world, but the ‘Social Justice Warrior’ concept only recently came to my attention.

What fascinates you most about writing?
The ability to move so omnisciently is what I find the most intriguing. I’ve been accused of head-hopping, but I don’t care because it’s only in writing where it’s possible to jump between peoples’ reactions within a situation. Seeing how different characters view the same experience differently is a fascinating reality of life to explore. In films, we are restricted to the world of action. All emotion must be communicated by something the actor is doing or saying, or the image that’s being used. In writing, we can move from the outside room into the mind of the character, and then into the mind of another character and see how those elements can bring about dramatic tension.

Do you have any authors or mentors who play a big role in influencing your work as an author and creative?
I draw inspiration from dozens of people and creatives so I’m hesitant to just list a few, though I have to say Joseph Campbell has been a big influence on my broader way of thinking about stories and the purpose they serve to humanity. His understanding of mythology and its value was really staggering, evident by his ability to communicate his ideas clearly and simply. I think everyone should read his work.

I also love reading Cormac McCarthy, Alexandre Dumas, J.R.R. Tolkien and J.K. Rowling. I find Cormac McCarthy’s writing style to be so much like actually living life. There are pages and pages of mostly description drawing you into the experience of his world and then his scenes of violence are these punchy assaults on your psyche. I admire that ability to delve into the adrenaline of brutality and communicate it so realistically.

Alexandre Dumas’ Count of Monte Cristo is a great revenge tale about a man caught up in the political motivations of those around him, which certainly has some similar story elements to my novel.

It’s hard to estimate the impact fantasy/science fiction has had on me. I read J.R.R. Tolkien’s the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings by the time I was in second grade and my father was as close to a Lord of the Rings scholar as anyone I’ve ever met.

J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series was also a really great experience. I was the perfect age to read each of them as they came out so the series holds a nostalgic place in my heart.  I think both J.K. Rowling and J.R.R. Tolkien are as close to mythmakers as the modern world has had thus far. Both of their major works have such phenomenal archetypal character development.

Do you have plans for more books in 2018 and beyond?
I’ve got another novel I’ve gotten the first few pages written about a future fiction eugenics algorithm, but in the very recent future I’ll be developing a few dozen short story concepts I have in the works and a mythology micro-podcast where I do ancient mythological stories as short form audio poetry performances once a month. That project is called Myths, Metaphors, and Morality and will be released through my YouTube channel.

About the Book:
Punished for sins not her own, can a mortal claim her vampire mate?

The world of immortals must unite to save both themselves and the mortals they co-exist with from an ancient evil.

For Bede MacTaggert this means trusting in the warrior sent for her sister—a man of mystery, of power, and one who could easily sweep her into a world she's destined to be part of.

An imperial guard to the king of vampires, Gawain has always tuned out the needs of the flesh. Dedicating himself to the service of the royals, he's lived on the fringes of his people for centuries. Now he's forced from the shadows and into the arms of a woman who will awaken his heart and body to a passion unequaled.

Read an Excerpt:

"Frails are not to be toyed with," Gawain ground out and grabbed the girl, spinning her away, his sword at the ready as the man heaved upward, a dagger clutched in his hand. Gawain's sword rested easy on his palm, ready, the surface slicked with blood as he faced the coward.

"She's mine to do with as I choose." He gurgled, collapsing to the ground, his weapon falling from pudgy fingers. "Paid ten pieces of gold for 'em both, and I aim to get a might of use out 'em."

"Now she's mine," Gawain declared. Raising his sword, he drove it through the man's chest, pinning his twitching frame to the ground. He stepped back, his gaze sweeping the clearing. Males such as this did not travel alone, his cohorts would be close. He'd need to find and kill them…

Searing pain lanced through him, splitting his chest. Gawain glanced down. The thin, sharp tip of a blade stuck from his chest. He touched the blade and snarled. The metal was warm, when it should have been cold. Shock slammed into him as the blade began to glow, turning a searing red before changing back to normal, or as normal as it could be with blood racing down the weapon.

Whirling, his hand already scrabbling for the dagger's hilt in his back, he grabbed his assailant by the throat and lifted. Grunting as he pulled the weapon free, his lips curled upward. "You'd do well, wench, to know your place."

"If you think I mean to let you do her harm…" Sputtering, her nails digging into his wrists, the girl's brown eyes stared into his. Fear lay within the depths but something else stirred. Something dark, dangerous, easily recognized if one knew what they were looking for.

His fingers moved, tightening, loosening as he pulled her against him. Inhaling, he caught the faint scent of blood, fear, sweat, fire, and something sultry, sweet, and light on his tongue. Drawing the scent deep, he wallowed in it, his body responding to the aroma he'd dreamed of but never found.
Gawain inhaled slowly, his muscles tightening, burning. Using the tip of her dagger, he pushed the material of her shift aside. The scrolling marks of a serpent flared before his eyes. It coiled and danced beneath the girl's flesh.

Excerpt

“What’s happening out there?” Thomas asks as he watches headlights bouncing all over the place.

Emily hopes that someone is coming to rescue them, maybe not Mayor or Sheriff, unless there’s no one else. She isn’t in tune enough with engine sounds to know that it’s the same duner as before.

“I think someone’s driving your dune-buggy, and trying to climb up the path.” Thomas watches as the utility vehicle does a surprisingly good job at navigating and scaling the small hiking path.

White replies, “Oh, no need to worry about that. I have asked a friend to bring the duner up close. I usually do but it requires some aggressive driving, something I chose to save you from.”

They hear the old Volkswagen engine struggle and sputter as the driver pushes it into higher RPMs.

Emily asks, “Is that supposed to be happening?”

White walks to the window and stares thoughtfully. He bobs his head side to side and replies, “Yes and no. That is no easy task, and he is not as experienced as myself. Surely, he will be fine. I imagine he has quite the audience right now, which probably does not help,” he chuckles.

Emily is disappointed that it isn’t a rescue attempt.

“Do you think we will ever get out?” Emily asks. “I mean, if Mayor can’t even do it . . .” She sulks as she returns to her seat and stares at her hands.

White replies, “One problem is that Terra Viva is in a sort of stasis, a lockdown if you will. Mayor’s drastic attacks on her landscape has sent her into a defensive mode. He has tried to find a way out since the beginning, but I believe it will take something equally drastic for her to open up again. The fact that Lewis and Mary got out is enough reason to believe it is possible. But Mayor has only been more aggressive since then.

“Mankind has done enough to this beautiful earth, and Terra Viva has done so much for us. It provides food through various plants, vines, and trees, and produces, or at the very least orchestrates the amit and oxygen flows. And since everything is contained underground like a giant greenhouse rather than open earth of above, various and abundant vegetation can exist down here. I believe that if you search long enough, you can find just about anything, even a way out.”

Emily finds herself being filled with hope at these prospects but still feels like White is side-skirting the topic. She just wants to know how and how long.

Thomas, on the other hand, has distracted himself with the amazing news of trait-bearers and Luminants. He wonders if he shares any of his father’s abilities. With newfound confidence, he tries once more to make something happen, anything really. Following White’s example, he closes his eyes. He tries to remember and comprehend what White said to Maka, “Do not try to make something happen that does not want to happen.”

Thomas thinks he notices the slightest vibration. He opens his eyes in wonder and it stops.

Except I couldn’t be more wrong. The more he tries to find his one and only, the more I start falling for the Star Wars quoting, thick, black glasses wearing, super nerdy computer boy.

The only way to get Oliver Stark to notice me is to go from matchmaker to matchbreaker.
