Ophelia Flax and Prudence Bright, two out-of-work actresses find themselves in need of employment upon the S.S. Levathian. They wheedle their way into maid positions with Mrs. Coop of Schloss Grunewald, a castle situated in the Black Forest. When Ophelia and Prue arrive at the castle, it seems that they have been entered a fairy tale world. The forests surrounding Schloss Grunewald may contain the home of the Seven Dwarfs, complete with a dwarf-sized skeleton and bits of gold and everyone in and around the castle has gone absolutely crazy concerning the relics. When Mr. Coop dies after eating a poisoned apple, Prue is accused of the crime and locked in the castle's tower. Ophelia is now determined to clear Prue's name, find the real murderer and maybe even Snow White's final resting place.
This was a great blend of fairy tale and murder mystery. I absolutely loved that the plot revolved around the possibility that Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs existed and that their cottage has been found! This had me intrigued right away and I enjoyed seeing how different artifacts, ancestry and parts of the fairy tale played into finding the hidden remains. Ophelia and Prue may not be true sleuths, but they are completely witty and capable of solving the crimes. Ophelia had me laughing constantly. With plenty of fairy-tale references weaved throughout the story and clever plot-twists until the end, Snow White Red Handed is a unique mystery and I'm glad there is another coming soon!
