Bound
Mellea seems like any other seventeen year old girl.  She is working a job in the city to help her underprivileged family while she saves money up to go to school.  Then we find out that Mellea lives in the world of Selestia, ruled by the mysterious and possibly magic Guardians.  Mellea's father absolutely hates the Guardians and everything they stand for due to a dispute years ago.  Mellea's father won't even let her read a newspaper article about them and he really dislikes that Mellea works in the big city of Poridos, where the crystal towers of the royal Guardian family are located.  When Mellea is leaving Poridos City after work one day, she comes across a young man that has been shot.  She insists on helping him and staying with him until help arrives, even though it seems like that is the last thing that the man wants and he is rude, arrogant and kind of a jerk.  This is why it is such a surprise to Mellea that the man she tried to help is a Successor to the Guardian throne, Leo; and for some reason he has chosen Mellea to be his bride.  Now, Mellea finds herself bound to a man she hates and trapped in the crystal towers with the family that her father despises.

I ended up loving this story.  It is a good mix of fantasy, science fiction, romance and action.  Any young woman will find it easy to identify with Mellea's character.  She is down to earth, brave even in uncertainty and does not fall in love with the hunky Guardian Successor just because he's cute and has dreamy blue eyes.  In fact, Mellea fights their engagement almost every step of the way.
At first, I was very confused at why Leo chose to be bound to Mellea (as was Mellea), but as the story progresses, Mellea meets other members of the family and gets to know Leo as a real person, they seem to be the perfect match for one another.  The world of Selestia is an interesting one, there is the rich, sparkling and plasticy Poridos city where the Guardians live and the less affluent country side where the majority of the population seem to survive.  The Towers are the most richly described, as Mellea is trapped in them for most of the story.  As Mellea learns more of the history of the Guardians and the Tower, so do we.  It seems that M.J. Stevens has put a lot of thought into the world-building of Selestia.  I hope we get to explore it more in the next book, Divided.  The action really picked up near the end of the book, enough that I had to read until I was finished.  A foe from the Guardians past is back to hurt the family, there are a lot of plot twists and turns with Mellea's family and the old enemy to the Guardians.  The story ends on a very suspenseful cliffhanger leaving Mellea with many choices to make and decisions of loyalty.

Divided
MECH's have taken over and the Guardian's have been dispersed.  Mellea, who was finally coming to terms with being a bride to a Successor and finding her place with Leo, has been taken to a secret, underground location by her father.  Mellea wakes up to an unknown world, her father has been turned into a MECH, but is trying to fight against the MECH woman who rose up against the Guardians, she calls herself Doctor. The Doctor has connections to the Guardians and has found a way to neutralize their powers.  While in the underground facility one of the MECH's is trying to help by creating a serum to return the powers to the Guardians. Mellea must get the serum to the Guardians and make them believe in themselves enough to save their land and the people who look up to them.

An exciting, fast-paced sequel to Bound; I couldn't wait to see what happened after the cliffhanger!  Mellea came into her own in Divided, finding strength within herself. Even though she wanted to do nothing more than escape from the Tower walls before, now she is doing everything within her power to restore the Guardians and herself to the Tower once more.  Luckily, Mellea's water pendant survived with her, and she finds out that she can do amazing things with it.  I enjoyed getting to learn more about the Guardian faith, Livolism, as Mellea develops her powers.  Once Mellea finds the rest of the Guardian's and is reunited with Leo, Mellea becomes responsible for helping them realize that they must fight the MECH's.  Drama unfolds as family ties within the MECH world are revealed.  It was nice to learn the backstory behind many of the Guardians and their brides; Leo's history is revealed, helping to crack some of his outer shell.  What I liked most is that Mellea and Leo are still working on their relationship through most of the story, no insta-love for them and no worries of a love triangle.  I can't wait to see what happens next!

Ophelia Flax and Prudence Bright, two out-of-work actresses find themselves in need of employment upon the S.S. Levathian. They wheedle their way into maid positions with Mrs. Coop of Schloss Grunewald, a castle situated in the Black Forest. When Ophelia and Prue arrive at the castle, it seems that they have been entered a fairy tale world. The forests surrounding Schloss Grunewald may contain the home of the Seven Dwarfs, complete with a dwarf-sized skeleton and bits of gold and everyone in and around the castle has gone absolutely crazy concerning the relics. When Mr. Coop dies after eating a poisoned apple, Prue is accused of the crime and locked in the castle's tower. Ophelia is now determined to clear Prue's name, find the real murderer and maybe even Snow White's final resting place.

This was a great blend of fairy tale and murder mystery. I absolutely loved that the plot revolved around the possibility that Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs existed and that their cottage has been found! This had me intrigued right away and I enjoyed seeing how different artifacts, ancestry and parts of the fairy tale played into finding the hidden remains. Ophelia and Prue may not be true sleuths, but they are completely witty and capable of solving the crimes. Ophelia had me laughing constantly. With plenty of fairy-tale references weaved throughout the story and clever plot-twists until the end, Snow White Red Handed is a unique mystery and I'm glad there is another coming soon!

Eriale is almost an Adept magician, the most powerful there can be.  As the seventeen-year-old half-sister to the Queen, Eriale is found in the midst of a scandal when she turns a suitor into a sheep, she is sent on her first Journeyman's quest until the incident is forgotten.  While on her quest, Eriale is bound to use her magic to help those around her, but she also wants to do one important thing so that she can become fully adept- lose her virginity.  She hopes to do this with the help of Kealan, the courier who delivered the request for help.  First, however, Eriale and Kealan must stop an evil force that is destroying the lives of the people of Grumesh.

A fun, fantasy adventure in a beautifully built world with a strong heroine.  The castles, crystal fairies and magical workings were so well described that I had no trouble painting this world inside my head. I absolutely loved Eriale's character, she is strong, brave and level headed, but not without any faults. She was very easy to identify with.  Most of all, I enjoyed the way virginity was treated in the book, not something to be held onto and cherished, but something she needed to lose in order to fully gain her magic.  Eriale was ready to help in whatever way she could with her magic, even when it meant taking on pain.  Her relationship with Kealan was sweet, though I knew where it would go; it was interesting to see their interactions as the relationship developed.
