Pedro is a spirit guide, wandering around the space that comes after life and before moving on.  He stays in-between in order to help the living receive messages from those who have passed.  Pedro is able to pass messages through a psychic, Gwen.  Something big is brewing in the spirit world, though and Pedro must break some rules in order to help a lot of people.  On the Viking Maiden cruise ship, Gwen and her sister Jo have boarded to help other passenger with Pedro’s guidance; two elderly friends, Sylvie and Ernst are old friends meeting for their annual trip; and Paul and his wife Deanna who are finally getting over a tragedy.  Expecting a relaxing cruise, a nuclear explosion in the middle of the ocean places Sylvie and Ernst into a strange coma where they are sent into the spirit world with Pedro.  Paul is accused of murdering a housekeeping staff and with a tsunami on the way; Gwen and Pedro just want everyone back to where they are supposed to be. Brought together by Pedro, all of these passengers are in for one exciting cruise.

This book had a lot going on; paranormal forces, nuclear explosion, a murder mystery and a natural disaster all play a part.  While I didn’t think all of this was quite necessary, it kept the story moving.  The characters are what kept me reading, though.  I was most amazed by Ernst and Sylvie’s relationship and personalities.  They seemed very real to me and their humor was infectious.  Even though they were out of their bodies for most of the story, Ernst and Sylvie managed to have the best development, conversations and definitely the most fun.   I did like the combination of paranormal and science fiction for the explanation of the in-between, the dark matter and I wish that aspect was explored a little more.  The last quarter of the book really picked up pace as the many elements came together for a dramatic ending.

A Fairy Extraordinary Christmas Story

Tallulah the Christmas Fairy has awoken atop a Christmas tree in a loving home full of Christmas spirit and a loving family.  All of the other Christmas decorations welcome her.  Tallulah soon learns that Christmas doesn't last forever, but the attic doesn't have to be all that bad.  Tallulah meets the Halloween and Easter decorations and anxiously awaits as each holiday approaches.  As the years pass, however, Tallulah and the decorations notice that their family seems to celebrate less and less.  The decorations take it upon themselves to make their own holiday cheer.

This is a fun, whimsical Christmas story that reminds me of the magic of Christmas.  Tallulah's spirit is infectious as she doesn't let life get her down.  With elements similar to Toy Story, this will be sure to please adults and children alike.  For a short story, there was a lot packed in to this story, family, adventure, inspiration and a heart-warming ending make this a perfect Christmas time read.

Jack Hammond is an immortal.  Stuck to look like a 20 year old for more than 100 years, Jack has roamed the World without reason, meaning or knowledge or how or why he is the way he is.  Since the death of his love, Lydia, Jack has felt that there is nothing to continue for.  When Jack lands in Portland, Maine, things begin to change.  After bumping into a woman who looks exactly like Lydia and a man who is from too far in the past, Jack gets another chance at love and begins to understand exactly he is.

This is a very interesting paranormal romance story that I had no idea where it was going.  For this story, I really appreciated that the majority of the point of view was from Jack’s perspective.  Jack was a broken character when the story began and things could hopefully only get better for him.  He is also shrouded in so much mystery, that I wanted to keep reading even though the beginning moved slow for me.  Things began moving for me when Jack met Leah and began to figure out his connection to her and began to figure out exactly what he is and why.    Their romance moved fast, but for good reason and was exceptionally sweet.  I was really intrigued by what exactly Jack is, his family history and how the other immortals operate. The ending was very surprising and moved very fast, I couldn’t put it down!

About the Book:
Rarity from the Hollow is A Children’s Story for Adults.
Synopsis:

Lacy Dawn is a true daughter of Appalachia, and then some. She lives in a hollow with her worn-out mom, her Iraq War disabled dad, and her mutt Brownie, a dog who's very skilled at laying fiber optic cable. Lacy Dawn's android boyfriend, DotCom, has come to the hollow with a mission. His equipment includes infomercial videos of Earth's earliest proto-humans from millennia ago. DotCom has been sent by the Manager of the Mall on planet Shptiludrp: he must recruit Lacy Dawn to save the Universe in exchange for the designation of Earth as a planet which is eligible for continued existence within a universal economic structure that exploits underdeveloped planets for their mineral content. Lacy Dawn’s magic enables her to save the universe, Earth, and, most importantly, her own family.

Rarity from the Hollow
is contemporary social science fiction that includes elements of everyday horror, true love, and adventure. It is aChildren's Story for Adults. "In the space between a few lines we go from hardscrabble realism to pure sci-fi/fantasy. It's quite a trip." -- Evelyn Somers, The Missouri Review

Review:
Lacy Dawn is a pre-teen girl who lives in an Appalachian community called The Hollow.  Not many people escape The Hollow, but Lacy Dawn is smart.  With the help of her un-Earthly friend, DotCom, Lacy has been tutored and her parents have been changed from an alcoholic who likes to use the switch and a down on her luck housewife to loving, intelligent parents who will help her with her mission in life.  DotCom is not just helping Lacy Dawn to nice; he needs Lacy Dawn to save his home planet, Shptiludrp and her world.  With Lacy Dawn’s new found intelligence and her new and improved team, Lacy Dawn will be able to save Shptiludrp and Earth with the most extraordinary of means.
This book has a little bit of everything in it and I really didn’t know what I was getting into.  The beginning threw me for a few loops, with child abuse, mental health issues and sexual abuse, this story that is labeled as an adult fairy tale is most definitely for adults.  There is definitely a lot of strangeness in this book, but all of that led to wonderful insights and even better characters.  Lacy Dawn is irresistibly intriguing, I love her acceptance, heart, willingness to take on challenges and honesty.  Her growing relationship with DotCom was both fascinating and sweet.  DotCom’s transformation was probably the best part of this story for me, as he changes to a ‘real boy,’ the emotions and new sensations that DotCom was feeling as a human were hilarious.  The story really picked up for me when Lacy Dawn received her mission on Shptiludrp, an exciting and zany planet whose only hope is a dysfunctional family, their dog and an android who is turning into a man.
