Something has happened in the world that makes ghosts common as well as deadly.  Children are the only people who can see the ghosts and especially gifted children now work for a variety of Psychic Investigations Agencies to eradicate the ghosts.  Lucy Carlyle is one of these children, gifted with the ability to hear and experience memories of the ghosts.  After a terrible accident with her last agency Lucy goes out on her own to find employment with the small agency Lockwood & Co.; consisting of only Anthony Lockwood, George Cubbins and now herself, with no adult supervisors. On an investigation, Lucy and Anthony are able to separate a dangerous ghost from a home, but not without some damage.  Now, Lockwood & Co. must pay back the damages and when a very high profile and extremely dangerous case falls into their laps, Lockwood jumps at the opportunity.  The team prepares to enter one of the most haunted houses in England that seems to have a strange connection to the angry ghost in their previous case.

I absolutely loved the Netflix series of Lockwood & Co. and wanted to read the books.  I love the books just as much and was impressed at how well the show followed along with the books.   The writing pulled me in immediately as Lockwood and Lucy were investigating.  I absolutely love the premise of the worldbuilding with ghosts existing and able to hurt people through touch as well as children being the only people who can see, hear or feel the ghost's presence.  The plot of the story evolved steadily as the mystery of the ghosts unfolded as well as Lucy's past and hints about Lockwood and George's story.  The characters are amazing, these kids have all had to grow up fast with their abilities and have to work to support themselves, their families and their town.  Each character is harboring a secret and I enjoyed seeing the team of Anthony, George and Lucy begin to work together and get to know one another.  Most of all, I enjoyed all of the hauntings and the reasons behind them.   I am intrigued by Lucy's talent of feeling what the ghost was feeling through an object and if this might help the team lay more ghosts to rest rather than simply slaying or containing them.

Six months after their successful case clearing one of England's most haunted houses, Lockwood & Co. is asked to be at the evacuation of an unmarked grave, now known to be that of Dr. Edmund Bickerstaff.  However, Lockwood & Co. is not the only agency there, rival Quill Kipps and his team of Fittes agents were also asked to be present.  When the case turns out to be larger than expected, the agencies are asked to work together and Lockwood sees fit to challenge Kipp's team to a contest.  Bickerstaff's casket was unusual, from a time before The Problem, Bickerstaff is encased in iron.  His ghost emanates dark and powerful.  With his body is a curious glass and stand that is promptly stolen.  Now, Lockwood & Co. and the Fittes Agents are racing against one another to get the glass back and figure out it's purpose.

The Whispering Skull is the second book in the Lockwood & Co. series and I would highly recommend reading these in order.  I really enjoyed the case of Bickerstaff's grave as well as the bone glass.  The writing grew the suspense and slowly compounded the mysteries for a thrilling story.  I love the inclusion of the skull relic that George keeps at Lockwood & Co., the skull also gives Lucy's listening talent room to grow.  With George getting a peek into the bone glass, we see more of his character develop in this book as well as the Lockwood & Co. team dynamics shape up.  The mystery and revealed history of the bone glass gave some insight into The Problem and it's potential origins.  An exciting ending also reveals a secret of Lockwood's closed room.

The three agents of Lockwood & Co., Anthony, George and Lucy, are finally working in sync while dealing with London's ghost problem.  However, as the team has gained traction, they have had a much bigger workload and Anthony decides to bring on a fourth team member.  Holly Munro has been brought on mostly to take care of administrative tasks, but is not without talent herself. Lucy is immediately put off by Holly's apparent perfection as well as Anthony and George's admiration for her.  While working a prominent case, Lucy's listening talent got her in trouble and Holly saved her.  This case finally gives Lockwood & Co. an invite to help fight the very large Chelsea outbreak.  George quickly figures out the actual center of the outbreak and Lockwood and Co. along with some help from Quill Kipps' team take on the dangerous case of the Chelsea outbreak.

The Hollow Boy is the third book in the Lockwood & Co. series and I highly recommend reading these in order. WIth Lockwood and & Co. finally running efficiently, a new member is thrown into the works.  Holly's presence seems to be a positive force for both Anthony and George, but Holly and Lucy are uneasy with one another.  While I wish there was a better feeling of women supporting women, I understood Lucy's feelings of being replaced and how Holly's strengths seemed to enhance Lucy's weaknesses.  Lockwood seems to understand that Holly and Lucy are complementary to one another, but doesn't bother telling either of them this information.  Even with Holly's presence, Lucy's talent for listening to ghosts is gaining strength.  Lucy is realizing that fighting all ghosts off with weapons and harmful materials might not be the best way, lending a listening ear and trying to help with their need might be a way to keep everyone safe.  With the introduction of a different and powerful type of ghost, a Fetch, Lucy learns yet another facet of the ghost's abilities.  I was glad to see the talking skull as a larger presence as well as a sarcastic yet insightful source.  With Lucy making a life changing decision at the end, I can't wait to jump into the next book.
