Rebecca has just been dumped by her abusive boyfriend; she is left alone on a bridge in the rain contemplating her life and a new identity. She decides that she will now be Caden, a stronger version of Rebecca. With nowhere to go, Caden is glad when a car stops to pick her up. Gabriel is a little rough and rude, but he reluctantly allows Caden to sleep on his couch for the night. When Caden wakes up in the middle of the night, however, she does not find the Gabriel she met before. Now, he calls himself Tom and he is kind-hearted and childlike. Tom also invites Caden to stay forever, the exact opposite of what Gabriel told her. Caden begins to wade through the disassociated identities of Tom and Gabriel to find the key to bringing the two personalities together, but might end of finding more about herself.
The plot was really intriguing to me, not only because Tom/Gabriel had disassociative identity disorder, but because Caden decided to stay and try to figure him out when others have obviously failed him before. Both the characters were a little difficult to get to know since they were both in the process of finding themselves. This only made me more interested as the characters grew. Caden seems like a rebellious teen at first, but with helping Tom/Gabriel, she seems to find her place in the world. Caden's absent but controlling mom bothered me a bit since she was still seventeen, but not enough to ruin it. I thought I had the mystery behind Tom/Gabriel disorder all figured out, but the ending threw me for a huge loop and now I need the second book right now!
