In the village every year a Spring Maiden is chosen as a sacrifice to appease the gods and guarantee a fruitful spring. This year's Spring Maiden is determined to change her fate. Following her instincts and a strange one-eyed bird, this year's Spring Maiden finds her way to the woods and finds the bear god herself. She is given a gift, a name, Berja, and a warning about the use of her gift. Now, Berja makes her way back to the village, strong and confident, a mother. However, a war is on the horizon. with Berja and her children on the frontlines.
Berja is a novella based on Norse mythology. Told in rolling verse with lyrical prose, much like you would imagine hearing a story recited verbally. I was pulled into Berja's world easily as she attempts to escape her dangerous situation. I was very interested in the tradition of Spring Maidens and what their sacrifice meant. The story is character driven and told from Berja's point of view as she finds escape, power, purpose and tries to rebuild her life only to find that she was created to serve something bigger. Overall, a fast-moving tale of purpose and prophecy.

About J.K. Divia:
J.K. Divia is a Dark Fantasy and Thriller writer from the US. She is a Spoonie and has learned the importance of rest while pursuing her writing dreams. As a child she was often found playing in the woods or reading about world mythology, folklore and ghost stories which have influenced her writing. She has always loved creative writing and once she decided to take it beyond flash fiction writing contests, she found a writing coach and editor to help her achieve her goal of writing a page turning novel. A Sea of Blood and Tears is her debut novel.
