"It’s hard to get over how desolate the world is now. I haven’t seen another soul for over a week. And if I want to stay alive, I hope to keep it that way…" – Aiden, 18

About the Book:

Two boys fall in love in a deadly world, but it’s the secrets they keep that might kill them. From debut author Paul Michael Winters, Together in a Broken World (NineStar Press; $19.99; 978-1-64890-737-1; Pub Date: May 21, 2024) adds a queer romance twist to a popular post-apocalyptic road-trip storyline. Winters is an exciting new LGBTQA voice with a mission to normalize queerness and create joyful stories where you might not normally see queer characters.

Zach, 17, was visiting his uncle in a small Montana town when a mysterious illness ripped through the world. Most died, but those who survived the Infection became mindless killers, spreading the disease with a single scratch. Now, a year later, civilization lies in ruins, and Zach is the town’s sole survivor. Desperately lonely, he longs to return to his family in Seattle, but his fears hold him captive.

Meanwhile, Aiden, 18, is on a critical mission for the covert Scientific Collective, delivering vials whose contents could cure the Infection. Tortured by his boyfriend’s death, he welcomes the risks of the perilous journey. When a militia attacks Aiden, he flees to Zach’s town. The boys escape together and soon form a bond as they comfort each other in this desolate and broken world. The farther they travel, the more their affection grows, as do the forces pulling them apart. But their greatest threats are the secrets they keep. Zach hides details of his uncle’s death, and Aiden conceals the vials’ sinister origins. In order to survive, they’ll have to confront the truths that could tear their love apart.

Review:
The world as we know it has come to a halt,  the  power grid has shut down and a mysterious virus has been released that turns anyone infected into ravenous creatures. When the virus hit, seventeen year old Zach was visiting his uncle in a remote town in Montana. Zach didn't really understand what was happening, but watched his uncle perish and eventually set up in an abandoned bank surviving with his mechanical knowledge and  series of booby traps. Meanwhile, 18 year old Aiden is on a mission for the Scientific Collective delivering a potential cure to Seattle when he is attacked.  Aiden finds refuge in Zach's small town and Zach and Aiden hit it off, quickly realizing that they are attracted to one another.  However, Aiden doesn't want to put Zach in the path of trouble with the militia that is chasing him and Zach feels that he needs Aiden's help to get back to his family home in Seattle.  As they travel together, Aiden's and Zach's bond deepens as danger catches up to them.

Together In A Broken World is a young adult, dystopian, romance.  The story is fast-paced and jumps right into the action with Zach surviving in his bank vault and Aiden hitting the road with his precious cargo.  With no knowledge of what has caused the world to shut down or what illness has killed just about everyone, there are a lot of unknowns to figure out along the way.  Aiden and Zach are both wonderful characters and balance one another well.  Zach is resourceful and smart, but shy and fearful about the outside world.  Aiden is trained for survival, brave, strong and mission oriented.   While the post-apocalyptic setting is intriguing, the focus is really on Zach and Aiden's relationship.  From their first meeting, there is a strong attraction on both ends with an abundance of caution for different reasons for both guys.  Their relationship was very natural, despite the challenging environment.    I enjoyed the challenges they faced together as well as the other apocalypse survivors they met along the way.  Suspense was heightened throughout as the militia chased Aiden for his vials and doubt crept in as to whether Aiden's vials carried a cure or something worse.

I am thrilled to be hosting a spot on the WIFWULF  by Jackson Lanzing, Collin Kelly, & Dailen Ogden Blog Tour hosted by Rockstar Book Tours. Check out my post and make sure to enter the giveaway!

About The Book:

Title: WIFWULF

Authors: Jackson Lanzing, Collin Kelly, & Dailen Ogden (Illustrator)

Pub. Date: May 7, 2024

Publisher: Vault Comics

Formats:  Paperback, eBook

Pages: 112

Find it: Goodreads, https://books2read.com/WILWULF

Angela Carter's The Company of Wolves and Emily Carroll's Through the Woods meet Squad (Maggie Tokuda-Hall and Lisa Sterle), in WIFWULF - a tale of transformation, blood, and beauty that calls to the wild freedom of our true selves within each of us.

A haunting story of deep loneliness, raw wounds, wild magic, and the freedom of transformation.

Wif. Noun, Old English: A Woman; this word is also the origina from which the word “wife” is derived. Contrast with “wer,” a man.
Wulf. Noun, Old English: A Wolf, a wild carnivorous mammal of the Canidae family, which lives and hunts in packs.

WIFWULF is an original folklore myth telling the story of Charity Bjornsdotter, a young woman in 1860's Montana who spends her days in the woods with her closest friend, a local wolf she calls Silver Slash. Charity is on the precipice of marriage to the most handsome man in her small village, the mercurial-yet-beloved Paul Skeld. But as her husband isolates her from Silver Slash, she begins to feel a call to the wilds...for it is there that her true destiny awaits. WIFWULF is the harrowing tale of a woman forcibly separated from that which makes her feel alive, a reinterpretation of the classic werewolf myth... and the origin story of a new goddess.

A successfully funded, beloved project on Kickstarter, WIFWULF explores a few facets of trauma but especially speaks to relationship abuse, something that has touched more than one member of the creative team. It’s a story that reminds us that even when you feel at your most monstrous, you can find your way back. But not unchanged.

It is also a story about werewolves. About bloody revenge and deep loneliness. About the secret, sad meaning behind the howls we hear from the dark forests on the darkest of nights.

Experience this haunting story in the dark of night, in whatever moonlit warren you call home – or shed your skin, embrace the night, and run wild with magic – and become forever changed.

This book contains mature content and may not be for everyone. WIFWULF contains gore, intimate partner violence, body horror, and animal death.

For fans of Emily Carroll's Through the Woods, Angela Carter's The Bloody Chamber and Other Stories (specifically: The Company of Wolves), works by Kelly Link, Carmen Maria Machado's Her Body and Other Parties, Squad by Maggie Tokuda-Hall and Lisa Sterle, Clarissa Pinkola Estés' Women Who Run With the Wolves: Myths and Stories of the Wild Woman Archetype, Kelly Armstrong's Bitten, Pretty Deadly by Kelly Sue DeConnick & Emma Rios, By Chance or Providence by Becky Cloonan, Monstress by Marjorie Liu & Sana Takeda, and the films The Witch and Princess Mononoke (Hayao Miyazaki).

“This just may be the most beautiful ‘werewolf’ story I’ve ever consumed in any medium.”
-- Chris Shehan (The Autumnal, House of Slaughter)

"A luscious, vicious fever dream of a fairy tale about the cages we find ourselves in and the true cost of freedom. WIFWULF is the kind of story that lingers." -- Jody Houser (Harley Quinn & Poison Ivy, Stranger Things)

Review:

In a small town in 1860's Montana, Charity enjoys spending her days in the surrounding woods. During her time in the woods, Charity befriends a large wolf called Sliver Slash. Life changes quickly for fourteen-year-old Charity as war hero Paul returns from the front and asks for Charity's hand in marriage. Charity soon learns that her husband's time fighting has created demons as he spends his time drinking, isolating Charity and separating her from the woods she loves. When Paul brings home a gun to shoot her beloved wolves, Charity runs for the woods. In the woods, she finds her friends and she is transformed into a new being, one with the wolves. Years later, one of Charity's pups finds the man from Charity's past and she tells the story of her transformation.

Wifwulf is a hybrid comic book with both your typical comic style, journal entries, extra artwork, and appendices. The story is written as new folklore and immediately transported. me to the woods. I could easily relate to Charity and her story's themes of rebirth, transformation and becoming your true self. The concept art and guest art that is added to the story in every frame and is intricately detailed, beckoning a second look. The story is quick and fast paced but hauntingly meaningful, leaving the reader to fill in missing blanks and draw their own conclusions. I would have loved to read so much more of Charity's story, but I also understand why it was this way. The section of journal entries helped to round out the story at the end. I was very appreciative of all the information in the Making Of section which helped to deepen my understanding. The added concept art is also a bonus, and I would seriously love to have art prints of many of those.

Scorched

Jonas Shore is coasting through life as a 15 year old in 1974.  He relishes in his new found freedom and defiance as he takes up selling drugs at parties as a way to earn some money and support his mother.  When the consequences from the drugs catch up to him and Jonas' father dies, Jonas is sent to Lafayette boarding school for boys.  Jonas is paired with four other boys, known as a quint, who do everything together.  Jonas finds his place at Lafayette, doing well in school as well as within the diverse quint of boys. Before graduation, the quint takes a celebratory trip to Atlantic City where a tragedy befalls them and a secret is born.  Years later, Jonas runs a successful business when one of his quintmates shows up and threatens to derail everything he has built.

Scorched is a slow burn, coming of age thriller.  I was pulled in by Jonas' character and the dichotomy he projected with selling drugs and defying his father while wanting to be a good student and supporting his mother.  As Jonas' life took a turn, Jonas was faced with a lot of change at once, I was taken up by his journey and the choices he made as he came to Lafayette.  Lafayette was definitely an interesting place and I was intrigued by it's operation and the boys that were there,  The quint created a tension with five different personalities and walks of life as well as built in camaraderie and brotherhood.  Throughout Jonas' time at Lafayette, it was evident that something would happen with the quint, but I could have never guessed what bonded the group in the end and yet separated them. Jonas' adult life was also compelling.  I was rooting for him, his business and his family as he dealt with mental illness.  Through everything, Jonas seemed to grow to be a decent person; however, one of his quintmates threatens to dismantle everything for the sake of getting what he believed is due.  From here, the plot quickens considerably as pieces of the puzzle are put together and consequences begin to unfold.

Hi there! I'm Stephanie and I obviously love reading.  As, the title suggests, I read at least one hundred pages a day.  I enjoy most book genres; however, my favorites are historical fiction, fantasy, science fiction, thriller, horror and YA.  I also read a lot of non-fiction science and gardening books for my occupation.  I enjoy reviewing books and as always, any book that I receive for free is read in return for my honest review.
