Loyalty Binds Her.

More like a gangland war for turf and loot than chivalry, the War of Roses disrupted the life of the English commoners for hundreds of years. Roan Rose is the story of one of them, a girl born on the Yorkshire dales. When the Countess of Warwick decides to take sturdy, gentle Rose to Middleham Castle to be companion and bed-time poppet for her youngest daughter, Anne, her fate is changed forever. Rose bears intimate witness to the passions, betrayals, battles and all the reversals of fortune which will shape her lady’s life—and her own. Anne Neville will briefly become a Queen, and Richard, Rose’s secret love, will become a King, one whose name has become synonymous with evil. When her King is betrayed and slain at Bosworth Field, Rose returns to a peasant’s hard life. She has one final service to perform.

Review:
Rosalba Whitby is born during a tumultuous time, the War of the Roses has been disrupting the life in the English countryside for years.  Rose is the oldest of her mother's children and learns the trade of herbs and healing from her mother.  When Countess Warwick arrives in town in need of aid, Rose's mother is called and Rose is brought along to aid the ailing Countess.  Impressed with Rose, the Countess decides that Rose will make a good companion for her daughter, Anne Neville.  At the age of 10, Rose is reluctant to leave her mother and home; however, the placement will save her from a brutal father and early marriage.  Growing up intimately with Anne Neville and Richard Plantagenet, Rose becomes an intimate to their secrets.  She also bears a secret and shared love for the to-be King, Richard.  As she grows up, Rose must struggle with her love and allegiance between her charge Anne, who is promised to Richard and the growing love of the King that will be forever remembered in infamy.

Rich in historical detail that pulled me into the countryside, castles and battlefields of the War of the Roses, Roan Rose is an entertaining piece of historical fiction that shows a different side to Richard III.  In the light of the women who love him, Richard is not cast as the entirely evil and power-hungry King that is usually portrayed. Through Rose's eyes, Richard is seen from a young boy who is a bit weaker that the other's, but must try that much harder, Richard is consistently sweet and caring to his much younger cousin, Anne and her maid, Rose.  As Rose, Richard and Anne grow, the difficulty in the decisions that Richard must make are evident.  Rose is a strong willed, intelligent character.  It was interesting to see her fate as she was taken from the countryside and woven into the fates of the future King and Queen only to find herself right back where she came from.  With an interesting twist at the end, Rose's story is sure to delight.

This book was provided for free in return for an honest review.

Praise for Roan Rose
“a beautiful story of love and loyalty set during the tumultuous reign of Richard III”

“I loved the strength of this woman”

“This author has a powerful sense of Time and Place”

“Waldron certainly knows her history…Yet despite its accuracy … Roan Rose is ultimately a book about character”.

  REVIEW
The Secret Garden was one of my favorite books and movies when I was growing up and I would have loved to have this companion book to go along with it. Split into sections by month, each month includes outdoor activities, crafts, recipes and extra information about characters or themes from The Secret Garden that will help children connect with Mary, Colin and Dickon at Mistlethwaite manor. Looking forward to December, a time of year that you would not usually think about being in the garden, there are plenty of activities to keep children busy. The customs, food, stories and activities of children in Victorian England at Christmastime are the focus of the chapter. A recipe for Yorkshire Pudding might be something new for kids to try, especially with the nick-name of Toad-in-a-Hole. Several craft ideas for winter bird feeders encourage kids to connect with winter animals and a short story of the Oak and Holley Kings will help explain the change of seasons. Filled with plenty of activities, I loved the cut-out paper dolls and garden model as well as the nature game ideas such as the blindfolded walk. I'll also have to try the cute robin cakes and ladybug sandwiches. This book was received for free in return for an honest review.

Dissension: In the aftermath of the great cataclysm, vampires are enslaved by humans and used for blood sport as gladiators in the arena. Mira is undefeated, uncompromising, and unbreakable, but when an escape attempt leads her into the path of the city’s Regent, her destiny is changed forever.

Review:

Resonant
A strange virus is spreading through the air in Las Vegas, and everyone is susceptible.  April Tate has watched friends and neighbors turn into vampire-like creatures before her eyes, and then she figures out how to kill them in an attempt to get her family to safety.

This is a prequel to Reign of Blood and it has set up April to be pretty ferocious.  I like how April just does not assume that these creatures that are acting like vampires will actually fall prey to vampire folklore; so she tries out each method on the infected that she comes across.  This is a good set-up for a terrifying world where anyone might become a vampire at any moment, without a bite!  I can't wait to read Reign of Blood next.

About the Book:
Publication Date: October 27, 2014
Kensington Books
Formats: eBook, PaperbackGenre: Historical Fiction

A suspenseful, spellbinding novel of love, jealousy, and murder, The Ripper’s Wife re-imagines the most notorious serial killer in history through the eyes of the woman who sealed his fate.

“Love makes sane men mad and can turn a gentle man into a fiend.”

It begins as a fairytale romance–a shipboard meeting in 1880 between vivacious Southern belle Florence Chandler and handsome English cotton broker James Maybrick. Courtship and a lavish wedding soon follow, and the couple settles into an affluent Liverpool suburb.

From the first, their marriage is doomed by lies. Florie, hardly the heiress her scheming mother portrayed, is treated as an outsider by fashionable English society. James’s secrets are infinitely darker–he has a mistress, an arsenic addiction, and a vicious temper. But Florie has no inkling of her husband’s depravity until she discovers his diary–and in it, a litany of bloody deeds…

Review:
Life seems perfect for American socialite Florence, at eighteen years old Florence has traveled the world and is now on her way to Liverpool onboard the SS Baltic.  While traveling, she literally falls for the cotton magnate, James Maybrick.  By the time the cruise has ended, Florence and James are engaged.  Florence is in love, but struggles as an American within English high society and quickly learns that while she may look the part of lady of the house, she is essentially a prisoner.  As she learns more and more about her husband's true disposition, habits and cruelty, Florence herself falls into madness.

A suspenseful and thrilling view into the murders of Jack the Ripper.  I was happy to find out that this version of the story was loosely based on an actual diary that was found concerning the lives of Florence and James Maybrick, as I love writing based on actual history.  Starting out as a perfect romance, with a meet-cute akin to Titanic, even taking place upon a White Star Line Ship, I felt swept up in the gorgeous descriptions of the elegant clothing and setting of the time period. Sometimes, though the descriptions seemed a bit exaggerated at times. I even felt myself rooting for the relationship between Florence and James to move forward, even though I knew how it would end.  The honeymoon phase of their relationship does not last long, right away Florence begins to find clues that James is not who he says he is.  As the suspense builds, the madness begins to fill in and both James and Florence begin to act erratically.  I liked that the point of view was shown from both Florence and James' points of view, as both had separate reasons for their actions based on what they believed the other was doing.  When the Jack the Ripper killings begin and the view shifts to James' diary, the story picks up in gore and violence, but that makes for the perfect Jack the Ripper story in my eyes.
